I nearly gave up!

Any additional comments?

This is the hardest book I have tried to read in my lifetime and I have read a lot of books. The reason why is that the story, characters and world are extremely complex. Very important parts of the plot are inferred sometimes by one name or word and if you miss it you are going to fall behind!

But... as I rewound and listened again to some chapters I started to get it. Finding the Malazan wikia online also helped.

Once I got it, I really got it and quickly came to the conclusion that this is a work of absolute genius. The world is breathtaking and interesting, the plot lines are twisted and some very subtle with plenty of intrigue and subterfuge. I just fell in love.

My advice on reading (listening) to this is pay 100% close attention at all times and rewind when you need to. A few chapters in you should get the hang of it, after that it is like riding a bike.

One BIG disappointment for me is that Audible only have the first book in this TEN book series!!!!! This is a travesty for a series such as this and they really need to sort this out. Unfortunately, Amazon run them now and there is no way of ever explaining this problem to anyone that can do anything about it. So I have had to make other arrangements.

To conclude, this is a STONKER! If you like fantasy you have to read this!

High Fantasy at its best.

Brilliant story and well worth the listen.

Occasionally the scene changes are jarring which is a limitation of the audio medium.

Regardless makes you crave for the next chapter and makes you pay attention to the intricacies of the story.

gardens of the moon

Great opening book for the series.. this is my reread of the books, and I decided to go for the audiobook, which was a great choice. It's a shame that the rest of the series isn't available.

The narrator lets this down

Would you try another book written by Steven Erikson or narrated by Ralph Lister?

the performance is so bad that it makes it too difficult to get into the story, this has prevented me from enjoying the tail

What was most disappointing about Steven Erikson’s story?

the narrator is so poor, it makes getting into the story impossible

Would you be willing to try another one of Ralph Lister’s performances?

yes

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Didn’t even listen to this.

I couldn’t get into book 1 but download both together.
Just not one for me I’m afraid.

amazing just amazing

amazing and complex fantasy adventure. cannot wait to work through the series. a vivid world is created with gardens of the moon and although it is very definitely the start of something it can be enjoyed just as a one off
