Summary
England, 1937. In the village of Blacknowle on the Dorset coast, 14-year-old Mitzy Hatcher has endured a wild and lonely upbringing. Shunned by her neighbours, the arrival of renowned artist Charles Aubrey - along with his exotic mistress and their daughters - is like a breath of fresh air. As Charles's muse, Mitzy develops a deep and abiding bond with the Aubrey household over the course of the following three summers. Gradually, Mitzy begins to perceive a future she had never thought possible, and a powerful love is kindled in her. It is a love that will grow as she does: from innocence to obsession, from childish infatuation to something far more complex.
It will be almost 75 years before the consequences of this potent desire are fully played out, as a young man in an art gallery looks at a hastily-drawn portrait and wonders at the intensity of it. The questions he asks will lead him back to Blacknowle, and draw him to the truth about those fevered summers in the 1930s.

really engrossing
a fantastic listen. the story is really well read and the plot and sub plot make this one of the best audio books i have listened to. the accents are believable, characters likeable and the scene setting really engages the listener. i look forward to more of her work and will also seek out the reader as she made the book come alive.

Another beautifully crafted story by Webb
I love Katherine Webb's novels.
Her ability to describe places is second to none.
In this tale she continues her style of setting the plot across two time periods and as usual there is a cracking twist at the end.
I always care about Katherine's characters, and the main character in this book, Mitzy Hatcher is no different (although Cat from 'The Unseen' remains my favourite character).
There are themes of family, alienation, obsession and beauty in this book. Each character is so well written and the pace of the novel is just perfect. The suspense and intrigue is built in a beautifully subtle way and I am always satisfied with the way Katherine Webb ends her books.
Looking forward to her next novel.

Emotionally drained
What a beautifully written book and superbly read. I’m so sad it’s finished. I’ve been living it the last two weeks - listening only when I had peace and no interruptions. I cannot but give it five stars all round
