Summary

When Cal Weaver stops at a red light on a rainy night while driving home, he ignores the bedraggled-looking teenaged girl trying to hitch a lift. Even when she starts tapping on his window. But when she says, 'hey, aren't you Scott's dad?' and he realizes she's one of his son's classmates, he can't really ignore her. OK, so giving a ride to a teenage girl might not be the smartest move, but how much harm could it do?

Over the next 24 hours Cal is about to find out. When the girl, Claire, asks to stop at a restroom on the way home, he's happy to oblige. But the girl who gets back in the car seems strangely nervous, and it's only when they get nearer their destination that Cal realizes she no longer has the nasty cut that he noticed on Claire's hand. After he's finally let her out of the car he remains puzzled and intrigued. But it's only the next morning that he starts to really worry.

That's when the police cruiser turns up at his door and asks him if he gave a lift to a girl the previous night. A girl who has now been found brutally murdered. If Cal is going to clear his name he's going to figure out what Claire was really up to and what part he played in her curious deception. But doing so will involve him in some of the small town of Griffon's most carefully kept secrets - and a conspiracy as bizarre as it is deadly.

A tap on the window

Where does A Tap on the Window rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Worth listening to, also worth checking out others by same author, particularly No Time For Goodbye

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If you've got that much time - but who has these days?

I nearly binned this book…

I tried to listen to this book at least twice before I finally committed to listening to the full book and I’m so glad that I did, I was gripped!

Engaging, enjoyable read!

What did you like best about this story?

As with the other Linwood Barclay books I have read/listened to, I enjoyed the suspense alongside the twists and turns in the story, the character development and the plausible plot. Unlike the other books by this author, however, I did find the twist predictable but nonetheless this did not taint my enjoyment of it, nor did it minimise the suspense created. Well worth a read, particularly if you're a fan of the thriller/crime genre.

Which character – as performed by Mark Zeisler – was your favourite?

The main character - Cal Weaver.

An intriguing start turned into a great story

Any additional comments?

A new author for me based on a recommendation. From a great start, it kept me interested all the way through. I'll be downloading more from this author.

just ok.

it's a decent story, but there is a complete lack of emotion in both the book, and the narration that let's it down, I only truly felt any sort of emotive connection right at the end, which is a shame.

An enjoyable listen

As ever, Linwood Barclay writes a gripping, involving story and this is excellently narrated by Mark Zeisler. I did feel that the plot was a little weak and overly drawn out without the characteristic Barclay twists and turns. However, it did keep me listening and was ultimately enjoyable.
