Summary

Matthew Scudder is about to face every cop's worst nightmare: James Leo Motley, psychopath extraordinaire.

Twelve years ago Matthew Scudder lied to a jury to put James Leo Motley behind bars. Now the ingenious psychopath is free, and the alcoholic ex-cop turned private investigator must pay dearly for his sins. Friends and former lovers - even strangers unfortunate enough to share Scudder's name - are turning up dead because a vengeful maniac is determined not to rest until he's driven his nemesis back to the bottle…and then to the boneyard.

Great story and narration

I have read/listened to all the previous Scudder books up to and including this one. For me it is the best up to now.

The narrator brought the characters to life, this the coupled with a great story from Lawrence Block made this for me one of the best books i have listened to in a long time.

Thanks Messrs Block and Barrett

On to book no 9.

This one got to me

I really enjoyed this Matt Scudder story like the others I’ve listened to. Great characters and dialogue along with the complex storyline. So well told. It’s a hard one, it effected me emotionally. The fear and tension felt very close at times.

Good story, excellent performance

Joe Barrett's voice is perfect for the book. The story was good and the whole thing was a pleasure to listen to. I'm glad that the producers of audiobooks seem to have realised that the narrator is absolutely crucial to the success of an audiobook.

I have ordered some books of a different genre read by Joe Barrett, for instance, one by Anne Tyler.

I don't mean to downplay the book itself. I have bought lots of Lawrence Block for my Kindle. The Scudder stories are just right, though perhaps I could manage without quite so many references to AA meetings. The combination of his writing and Joe Barrett's voice is fantastic.
