Summary

Set in the same world as the Faithful and the Fallen quartet, the first story in John Gwynne's Of Blood and Bone series, A Time of Dread, takes place 100 years after the end of Wrath.
The Ben-Elim, a race of warrior angels, once vanquished a mighty demon horde. Now they rule the Banished Lands. But their dominion is brutally enforced, and their ancient enemy may not be as crushed as they thought.
In the snowbound north, Drem, a trapper, finds mutilated corpses in the forests - a sign of demonic black magic. In the south, Riv, a young, tempestuous soldier, discovers a deadly rift within the Ben-Elim themselves.
Two individuals with two world-changing secrets. But where will they lead? And what role will Drem and Riv play in the Banished Land's fate? Difficult choices need to be made. Because in the shadows, demons are gathering, waiting for their time to rise....

John Gwynne has done it again!

Having been a huge fan of the Faithful and the Fallen series it was with a little trepidation that I sat down to listen to Book 1 of John Gwynne's new foray back into the Banished Lands however I was not disappointed. There is so much I would like to tell the listener but should I tell anything of the story or its characters I feel as if I might take away a little of surprise about the outcome of a battle or the underlying humour when - even though we are listening - that 'next page' is turned and you are suddenly crying or laughing or swearing.

The narrator was good although I felt this time his rhythm was a little bit off and his pauses seemed to be in the wrong place but perhaps it is me being picky!

Overall this is another brilliant story from one of the UK's newer fantasy authors and without doubt I would recommend this to all who love excellent well-written books.

Very good

Very good continuation both in story and in performance of the Faithful and the Fallen, although the narration was a bit jerky and robotic in places, though this is more likely due to the editing than the reader.
