Summary

John Milton is a ghost. He was Number One. The most dangerous assassin in Group Fifteen, the black-ops organisation that solves problems when diplomacy has failed. Now Milton is Her Majesty's most wanted fugitive - an anonymous loner with a deadly set of skills.

So when he is arrested following a brawl in a Texas bar, the last person he expects to bail him out is a glamorous operative from the Russian Secret Service.

Milton is blackmailed into finding his predecessor as Number One. But she's a ghost, too, and just as dangerous as him. He finds himself in deep trouble, playing the Russians against the British in a desperate attempt to save the life of his oldest friend. Some ghosts are better left alone. But these two have been disturbed, and now there's going to be hell to pay.

Mark Dawson has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, The Art of Falling Apart and Subpoena Colada have been published in multiple languages.

Worrying?

I am really enjoying Mark Dawson's books and in audible form I can multitask and feel no guilt at taking in another book! Good narration, trust me I switch off if I can't cope with how a book is read!
This one has a theme which I have long thought possible and shows just how we are all unaware of what the 'powers that be' control.
Needless to say I have downloaded the next in the series.

Best in the John Milton series to date

Punchy, great story ljne, straight into the action and much more of it than the first three John Milton books. Loved it.

Best John Milton story so far

Very good story which brings the John Milton and Beatrix Rose back-stories together.

I had started to find the individual John Milton stories rather repetitive: mysterious lead character arrives in town, meets damsel in distress and helps resolve her problem in a hail of bullets and other violence. The set-up for this is different, based on an old Milton/Rose operation, but don't worry, the violence remains.

Another John Milton classic.

Is he finally free of Control? The story continues and we will have wait and see what happens next. Many twists and turns but gripping and beautifully read as ever. Ready for the next book.
