Gresham does it again.

The Second in the Henry Gresham series this book is set in England around 1612, at the court of King James I of England and VI of Scotland and in the theatrical world of that period. We meet again Grresham, his wife Jane and his faithful servant Mannion, the plot involves many historical figures including Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Robert Cecil and of course the King.

Robert Cecil, chief secretary to the king, summons the gentleman spy, Henry Gresham, to his death bed to give his arch enemy one final case.

An unknown Cambridge bookseller has obtained compromising correspondence between King James and Robert Carr, and Gresham is asked to recover the letters and return them saving the monarch from a scandalous downfall.

The Conscience of the King is a fast moving thriller with a well crafted plot, it is full of plots, cover-ups and conspiracy theories. It even examines who really wrote the plays of Shakespeare.

Some reviewers have questioned the way that fact and fiction have become blurred, in my view It should be enjoyed for what it is a a rollicking adventure and a great listen. Yet again the narration and characterisation are excellent.
