Summary

The eighth book in the Empire sequence takes Centurion Marcus Aquila and his Tungrian legion on a dangerous mission to the heart of the Parthian empire.

With Rome no longer safe, Marcus and the Tungrians are ordered east, to the desolate borderlands where Rome and Parthia have vied for supremacy for centuries.

Ordered to relieve the siege of an isolated fortress, their task is doomed to bloody failure unless they can turn the disaffected Third Legion into a fighting force capable of resisting the terrifying Parthian cataphracts.

And Marcus must travel to the enemy capital, Ctesiphon, on a desperate mission, the only man who can persuade the King of Kings to halt a war that threatens the humiliation of the empire and the slaughter of his friends.

Great book.

Ok we're on book 8. It was great. This book reads differently than the previous. It's not a criticism, in fact I thought it was quite well done.
Although Marcus is still our main man. The way I found it was, all the usual suspects are in the book, but everyone gets a lot bigger part to play. We all know the gang & as the books have introduced them to us (books 1 to 7 many many thanks to Saul, you make it happen for me) they all, well nearly all have larger parts in this book. You find out a little bit more about some, others just get bigger parts or missions to go on.

Great book bring on IX.

My breath was held as new tribune Vaurus went into battle ,twice, brilliantly told expertly written, another fantastic book in the series, with hordes of eastern warriors.

Anthony Riches at his best.

Great story by A.R. and superb narration by Saul Reichlin. He really does his research.

Another great book and narration

Another page turner from Riches. His writing is off such a high standard and the narration is superb. Thank you!

Difficult to follow. Poor narration

I have read the other books in this series and was looking forward to the latest .
But this is difficult to follow, the characters all sound like they've stepped out of Brideshead Revisited or are retired old Etonians, with not much difference between individuals.
Which given that the average Roman soldier was aged between 20 - 40 really doesn't sit well.
A shame because it's a great series which had me hooked and eager for this audiobook.
Perhaps next time whoever is in charge of employing a narrator might think twice before engaging an old Shakespearian voice coach to read a Roman adventure with characters a third of his age.
It doesn't work that well.
