a good yarn

Sean Barrett is without doubt a fabulous narrator so I feel most books he reads will usually be enjoyable. The story is good and I will definitely get part two when it is out. Dug is a fine character and there is an equally good supporting cast of characters. it's a typical road movie of revenge and mishap that chugs along at a comfortable pace. The historical notes have been kept in at the end which is helpful for me as like that sort of thing--if you tend to enjoy Bernard Cornwells Saxon or Arthur books, or a bit of Game of Thrones fantasy and are looking for a new tale, I reckon you will like this too-if you don't just send it back

Refreshing take on fantasy.

Would you consider the audio edition of Age of Iron to be better than the print version?

I'm a great lover of audible and thought the narration by Sean Barrett really good. I haven't read the printed version but generally i find if the narrator paired with the book is good then i feel it adds extra enjoyment over any printed book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dug was a brilliant character and to me instantly likable. I found him to be funny and although a lot of the time he tried to stay out of trouble invariably he became the heroic savior....also I've never heard so much Badger related profanity in my life! Brilliant stuff!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Without giving too much away probably the inn scene when Dug meets Lowa.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Again not trying to give too much away probably Dugs love life and his attachment to spring.

Any additional comments?

I loved the setting of Iron age Britain and the way Angus Watson managed to combine real history with fantasy fiction. This gave the story a rich and believable feel. Can't wait for the next book.

I found it difficult after listening to the first two Raven's Shadow books to find something that held my attention. I am please to say this certainly did. The story moves along at a good pace, interesting character and some dark humor make this a must read if your looking for something to fill the space between Anthony Ryans next book....

Hammer of the North!

I took to this book right from the very start. The time when Rome invaded Britain not once but twice is a genuinely dark and hidden period with little historical documentation so I loved the prelude which promised to tell us what "really happened". What follows is a very entertaining adventure which, as far as we can likely tell sets up a very credible Iron Age Britain.

This already feels like a well-structured trilogy at this point. The book could well be described a scene-setter and an introduction to the interesting set of characters, especially Dug. It does however tell a story which it brings to a conclusion before hinting at a storm to come.

I think it's fairly inevitable that this will be compared to Abercrombie. It goes for the same imperfections of character and the relationships between Watson's lead protagonists generate a similar type of humour. I'll never be able to look at a badger in the same light again! Sean Barrett gives a very entertaining performance and with plenty of action and intrigue this never seemed to drag at any point.

I shall have to avail myself of book two in the not too distant future. I'm very much hoping that Dug and co can give the Romans the hammering we'd all like to think they got!

Postscript : Having now read the whole series I can certainly confirm that it just gets stronger and stronger. I think few people will like this first book and then be disappointed with two and three. Watson delivers on his promise.

historical fiction meets gritty fantasy

Really enjoyed it, kept me gripped from start to finish. Interestingly combines the historical fact with the beliefs of the time, resulting in an Abercrombie style gritty fantastical darkness.

Good listen

If you could sum up Age of Iron in three words, what would they be?

Surprisingly a good read / listen , normally I go for Roman fiction so it was good to hear a story about Britain before the Roman invasion , now waiting for the rest of the series

Age of Iron...Steel Yourself!

An action packed, well written fictional glimpse (includes a few oo, er moments) into a bygone age with colourful characters brought to life by the exceptional narration skills of Mr Sean Barrett. So glad this is a trilogy...can't wait to read more! Cleaning the house has never been more fun...thanks Audible. :)

Great story

This story is quite captivating couldn't wait for the next chapter it's a bit gorey in places but we'll written so doesn't dwel on it. I love the reader he has the perfect accent for the plot I could listen to him all day. Well worth the long dog walks!!
