Summary

Always Hungry? will be both a relief and a revelation to many who struggle with weight. We're not getting fat because we're overeating; we're overeating because we're getting fat.

In other words, what makes us constantly hungry, overweight and undernourished is not a lack of willpower but a biological reaction to our present-day diet and lifestyle.

Our fat cells are hoarding the nutrients from the food we eat instead of releasing them into the bloodstream to be used, triggering a starvation response that sets us up for failure: if we eat more, we'll gain weight; if we eat less, we'll slow our metabolism down and (again) gain weight. Help!

Always Hungry shows us how to break out of this cycle that is keeping us overweight. It helps us to:

  • Reprogramme our fat cells
  • Tame hunger
  • Boost our metabolism
  • Lose weight

In a clear, compassionate and authoritative voice, Dr. Ludwig debunks the calorie myth that losing weight is simply a matter of eating less. He explains the science and the research behind our epidemic of overweightness and presents a detailed, highly structured plan to help us conquer the cravings.

Interesting links to Keto and Atkins

Promoting the eating of fats and lowering of carbs, this isn't a new idea. However, the science backing up some of the claims are interesting cases, and it does give some new approaches to the idea of diet and nutrition. Can get robotic in the heavy research sections, but overall is a fast-enough move through the ideas.
I liked the vignettes, made me giggle, and the asking and resolving of questions was a nice way of stopping your mind from wandering in the drier sections.

At last something that will work!

This audio/book has changed my relationship with food. I am going to try phase 1 shortly and will report my progress.
Basically fat and protein are good and low fat/carb diets are a false economy!
For those still deliberating there are some YouTube clips re Dr Ludvig's claims and worth a search.
The only complaint: which I'm sure will be addressed soon is its very USA and not too British/Irish friendly! Some variants of foods I've never heard of. Though I have prevailed and ready to start the recommendations in this exciting piece of research.
Zab!

the proof of the pudding...

This is my first self-help book. Like the author, I am a doctor engaged in research who has thickened with age.
It was an easy listen. I wasn't mad keen on the frequent patient stories and would have liked to hear about how people had failed on the diet. However, I have given it 5 stars because the evidence seems to be compelling and was well presented, and because of the comprehensive material that you can download with the audiobook.
I haven't started the diet yet but I would recommend this book as a good place to start.

A good primer for health

But I think it's not really suited to an audio book format.
Nonetheless, I wouldn't discourage anybody from getting it if they want help with health and weight - the information in here is excellent. I follow this way of eating myself and find it an exceptionally God way to live.

A human scientist explaining nutrition

It was a pleasure going through this book and all what I have studied as a nutritionist makes sense.

There is hope !

Would you consider the audio edition of Always Hungry? to be better than the print version?

I find listening on the go allows me time to benefit from the book I just don't have to sit down and read

What other book might you compare Always Hungry? to, and why?

Good calories bad calories by G Taubes - similar insightful and balanced look at the flawed nutrition we have all be brought up on

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

We need the PDF I have contacted audible. The book makes lots of reference to the PDF but it did not accompany the book

Boring and should be condensed to 10 pages.

far too many useless reviews throughout the book, no talk of how long it took them, how long they kept it off, same rubbish every diet book talks. ultimately a few snippets that re enforce what you know but I wouldn't waste your time/money...

Not audio worthy

The actual book may be a better purchase than the audio. Many references are made to 'its outlined on the pdf' but of course there is no immediate value in that. You would need to then access a computer and google them.

There are also a lot of annoying 'my story' narratives that explain an individuals weight concerns with a finale of how many inches lost having followed the plan. It sounds in part like a cheap womans magazine with dieting tips and a load of facile padding (no pun intended)

My mistake in purchasing - I was more interested in the science theory behind why someone can be always hungry and how to tackle it, not a diet plan 101. I apologise if the book gets more gritty further on - I couldn't listen for longer than 2 hours.

Do not buy this as an audiobook

The audiobook is written as a book you'd follow along as you progress with the diet plan. This obviously is lacking since I go from week one of the diet to week two on my ride to work.

The overall diet does make sense and I'll definitely try it!
