Summary

A city girl through and through - how will she cope with country life?

The brilliantly entertaining new audiobook from the author of Katy Carter Wants a Hero.

Amber Scott loves her city life - a terrific job working on a glossy magazine and a fiancé, Ed, she's known since uni. Even if Ed doesn't take her job seriously (as a solicitor, he doesn't have much time for women's magazines!), it is Amber's dream job. So Ed's news that he has taken a job in the West Country turns Amber's world upside down.

The new life in Cornwall does not get off to the best start. The huge house Ed was so keen on is, well, huge - what is Amber going to do with four acres? And do M&S make Aga-ready meals? And when a handsome, if surly, man leads the local hunt over her land, it's more than Amber can stand.

So how is it that before long, Amber is friends with the local eccentric lady of the manor, making love potions at her mother's recommendation - and answering the door naked to strangers?

Tries to be Bridget Jones but nowhere near

There are a lot of similarities between this and Bridget Jones - the movie not the book. It feels like the author is trying so hard to be Helen Fielding but she’s not. Bridget Jones is so much better. Some parts of it are repetitive, some are frankly annoying (I found the main character irritating at times) I also found that the narrator loves giving characters a weird theatrical accent. I mean what is it with Jinx’s accent?? He sounds like the dubbed version of a Brazilian soap opera...Then Alex. Again why does the narrator has to make him sound like Colin Firth in Bridget Jones? Oh and let’s not forget Ali, who pretty much is the equivalent to Shazza in Bridget Jones down to the swearing.
So, aside from riding Bridget Jones’ coat tails and the weird narration of some characters it’s an enjoyable book. I did listen until the end. It was free with my membership so for that it was good.

Slow

Nice story but frustrating that I had joined the dots hours before her. Disappointed by the final showdown and that there was no column to end it (focus on Ed). Love chick lit but this didn’t hit the spot for me.

Would have been good if less drawn out

The characters are good. The mums voice is irksome. But mostly it was too long for what it was. The story just went round and round until the obvious ending finally came.

excellent storyline

Alought some aspects of the storyline are predictable and it takes a while for them to come to a head. The journey that the author takes you on is entertaining and lighthearted. This is definately worth a listen as apart from a few shady attempts at accents the story is written well.

Am I seriously losing the plot

This book is painful. You'll be doing so much audible sighing at how painful, don't listen to it while out in public or you'll start terrifying people.
The story is basically determined in the first couple of chapters, but it takes Amber the whole book to stumble to the conclusion. The ending covers this long built conclusion as if the writer has just realised they've hit their word limit and can finally end their torment.
It's chock full of cliches and repetition of just pointless phrases (am I losing the plot is used a lot, eat your heart out tv show / celebrity / etc.).
Amber is so ridiculously self depreciating, it's tiresome. Every description is ' they are so beautiful and I am so dowdy, blah blah, how could anybody compare me favourably, blah blah'. There is literally no character development except she let's her hair grow out and didn't mind some muddy clothes'. Maybe that's considered personal growth in some people's world but not mine.
I think this would be more tolerable as a book, where you can scan some of the more banal elements, but having to listen to them in narrated was painful. The performance wasn't bad, although the narrators Cornish accent migrated around the world a few times, it just prolonged the agony.
I finished it to give a fair review, but I strongly recommend you don't. If you start despite the review, just be aware it doesn't really get better.
In conclusion, I do not recommend.

a kick ass female lead book!

Great book! I was wondering where it was going and there's a few parts where I found myself openly shouting at the protagonist haha

really enjoyed this book, there were a few repetitive lines but I think that was the author trying to get a point across and it feeds well into the story.

one of the more enjoyable easy listen to as I like the narrator.

quite simple and predictable

not entirely horrible, but not great either. the performance of the narrator was also average. she seems to have a very repetitive intonation.
