Summary

Annie Swinburn had killed a man - the killing was timely and well-deserved, for Francis Morton had been evil in every possible way. But Annie knew that however justified her crime, only the rope and the gibbet awaited her if she remained in the slums of Hull. And so she ran - up river, along the wild and secretive paths of the great Humber - a new and unfamiliar territory which was to lead her into a new and unfamiliar life.

Her first refuge was with Toby Linton, well-born, estranged from his father and - with his brother Matt - earning a dangerous living as a smuggler. Annie led a double life, as a smuggler, and as a pedlar roaming the remote countryside of the Wolds. It was this new existence which led her, once more, into allowing herself to love, in spite of all the things that had gone before.

Evocative and enthralling

So enjoyed this book of Val Wood’s, what a beautiful writer able to draw you into a story line and weave a plot from beginning to end.
It’s a history lesson on one hand and an engaging story of how we humans deal with tragedy, joy and pain, each one of us finding a way to take our place in the world.
Can’t wait to get on to her next book....

Great to listen to.

Great books in a trilogy, Annie is the second in the series and can be read as a standalone, or in order. The reader does all the voices brilliantly and the story really comes to life. I think these books are better through Audible. Some slow bits within this story, but it makes up for it with the twists and turns.

Awesome

I really enjoyed Discovering what happened to Annie. It’s a great book and I was a bit sad when it finished. All the characters were real and believable. Anne Dover, as per usual, read perfectly. I would recommend this book an excellent 2nd book. Val Wood is a great writer for sure.

Another womderfull gripping tale

I have heard so many books by this author and have enjoyed each one with delight and familiar streets as I am hull lass myself. this book seemed longer than the others as this ladies life was so full of highs and lows. As with the Hungry tide. this is a book that you don't want to end. Now to listen to the 3rd instalment off this trilogy. I would recommend too anyone who loves books full of life. Well done once more to V.Wood for another fantastic tale .

Brilliant

Oh my goodness me what a wonderful story expertly read by Anne Dover. I love books written by Val Wood and can't wait to listen to another. Once again, I know the area so well and Val Wood has a way of describing the beauty of the Wolds that I felt that I was there. From the sad beginning of the story to the happy ending I couldn't stop listening.
