Summary

"I had to go back to New York and try to find him. There was a chance he mightn't be there, but I had to give it a go because there was one thing I was certain of: he wasn't here."

Anna Walsh is officially a wreck. She's covered in bandages and she's lying in her parents' Good Front Room dreaming of leaving Dublin and getting back to New York. To her friends. To The Most Fabulous Job in the World. And most of all, back to her husband, Aiden.

But her family have other ideas (not to mention the usual problems that beset the Walsh sisters). And Aiden, for some reason, seems unwilling to get in touch.

What happened to Anna to send her so far from all that she loves? And what happened to her marriage that her husband won't talk to her?

Critic reviews

"The jokes are as good as ever, Keyes' large cast of Irish and American characters fizz and crackle....High-quality entertainment" ( Marie Claire)
"The novel is a rare blend of genres, a richly enjoyable satire and an inspirational tale of one woman's triumph over despair" ( Daily Telegraph)

Abridged.

I love this book, but this edition is abridged so that most of my favourite parts are missing. Don't bother.

Abridged

This is one of my favourite books by Marian Keyes but this abridged audiobook sucks a lot
of the joy out of the story - no Helen subplot, none of the hysterical emails between Anna and her mum. Very disappointing and it should be made clearer that it’s abridged.

Why is this book abridged?

Love Marian Keyes and have a lot of her books. For some reason this is an edited down version of the book which is just odd. Not the best narration either

abridged? no, hacked to pieces!

the Walsh books are my absolute favourite, but I was not aware this was an abridged version and even if I had been, I never would have expected Marian Keyes' beautiful writing to have been decimated quite so brutally. All of the humor and a lot of the emotion has been ripped out of this book, and I'm actually sorry I listened to it as it's sort of sullied my view of the actual book.

A new form of chic lit

'Anybody Out There' captures all the best of chic-lit, the romance, the femininity and (mostly) the humour, but this Audible version made all of those factors hard to appreciate with the terrible American accents from Niamh Daly.

Her native Irish is stunning to listen too, and her reading contained superb emotions and reactions, but every attempt at an American accent made my skin crawl. They didn't sound human, never mind American!

All in all, Keyes is making strides in the chic-lit department with unique, interesting and complex stories, but this version was hard to listen too.

Awful narrator!

I love Marian Keyes but this was a real disappointment. The narrator was quite boring, I'm used to Gerry Halligan reading Marian's books and she is great! I couldn't get into it but it doesn't stop me listening to other books by Marian.

Another fabulous story from the grand Irish Family

Funny, emotional human and endlessly entertaining.
I love this series. Never been disappointed by anything from Marian Keyes and I’m not really a Chic Lit girl. Great.

A difficult subject, beautifully tackled

I haven't read the book (which I have now ordered) so didn't realise this was an abridged version. So I didn't experience the frustration of others who already know and love the story. Without giving anything away, in this book Keyes tackles a difficult subject, dealing with it sensitively yet with her usual humour. The bits I find dull in all of her books that I have read - makeup, fashion and the predictable bonking scene - are all in there, but this is an intelligent story that takes you from one emotion to another. This is a story with some depth, which many of us will be able to relate to in some form.
