Summary

Cicada from Mark Nickels is poetry on the edge. The collection is "nearly a new species", says Jim Harrison, author of Legends of the Fall. You have found a refreshing dollop of originality.

Mark Nickels grew up in western Michigan and lives and works in New York City.

Critic reviews

"It's pretty obvious that [Nickels] has developed [his] own voice, which can take a while, the tumbling rhythms and adjectives. The music of Cicada is penetrating and distinct." (Evan S. Connell, author of Son of the Morning Star)

Magical

Someone once unkindly dismissed Victor Hugo's verse as 'images propagating themselves in an intellectual vacuum.' The case with Mark Nickels is entirely different. In 'Cicada' the images proliferate but there is no doubting that they come from an exquisitely civilised urban sensibility. I have listened again and again to his reading and cannot recommend it too highly.

I wish Audible would give Poetry its own search category, just in case there are more marvels like this lurking undiscovered.
