Audible Editor Reviews

Alan Cross, beloved radio broadcaster and documenter of all things rock presents an artist profile of David Bowie, as part of his Alan Cross Guide to Alternative Rock audiobook series. Cross, in his familiar, affable, radio voice, discusses the ever changing persona of Bowie who, Cross says, in another line of work may have been diagnosed as a terminal case of attention deficit disorder, but in the world of rock is lauded as a genius and trendsetter whose chameleon-like changes are actually carefully calculated works of style and artistry. Bowie's career has spawned volumes of rock criticism but anyone looking for a quick primer to the Thin White Duke's life and work will find this an informative and engaging profile.

A relatively brief overview...

The narrative focused on several phases of Bowie's career, and gave a brief summary of the key events of each phase, and the key albums. It was somewhat short, but I would say it's still good value.

Not too bad.

Quite insightful. Learned a couple of facts that I didn't already know, and without having to trawl through the plethora of Bowie biographies, but couldn't shake the feeling that Alan was just reading from a script that somebody else had produced, (Could detect no real sense of enthusiasm for the subject matter). There are a few glaring mistakes, and mispronunciations, but, all in all, not a bad listen. 5/10
