Slipping in a Mickey

Would you consider the audio edition of My Sporting Life with Micky Thomas to be better than the print version?

The positives about all audio books when the practagonists read the script is that is authentic and correct. However Mickey can tend to mumble a little and Danny speeds through sentences at such a rate than you can't just go back and read what you may have missed. It is definitely better than reading the conversation though

What other book might you compare My Sporting Life with Micky Thomas to, and why?

I have listened to three in the series and have enjoyed all three, but the Joe Royle one impressed me most because of Joe's humour and full story. Tony Cottee is a good speaker too. Here we have Mickey Thomas who has led a fascinating life although maybe it's difficult for him to comment completely on all aspects

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Danny Kelly is always well researched and enthusiastic. He may have listened to Mickey's self deprecating after dinner speeches and assumed everything was game for a laugh but there was a real story here of a man struggling with his own character flaws that probably needed a more disective analysis that wasn't right for the radio show format

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Hearing how Mickey ran away from his problems and how each chapter of his career ended tragically was more impactive than I thought it would. I felt that if he understood himself better he could have had a less frenetic and colourful life than he suffered from

Any additional comments?

The Danny Kelly series is better than I thought and I have enjoyed what I have listened to so far. Initially, I just selected those interviewees connected with the club I support but now I am willing to extend that further. It's certainly unbeatable value for money!
