Publisher's Summary

From the villages and small towns of Eastern Europe in the 50 years that span the turn of the 20th century came some of the finest Jewish Folk humor. From these sources derive the stories of the great Yiddish writers, Peretz and Mendele and Sholom Aleichem, and Fiddler on the Roof. Marvellously simple tales of the poor, the vain, the foolish, the eccentric, the quick-witted, the gullible, the honest, and the rascally.David Kossoff is one of the world's best-loved storytellers and Kossoff reading Kossoff is a listener's delight. Each story in this unique collection is framed with carefully selected and appropriate music.

Audible Editor Reviews

Beloved 20th-century British actor and writer David Kossoff performs his stories of an old-world rabbi whose cheeky sense of humor solves the problems of his frequently befuddled congregation. Both Jews and non-Jews alike will appreciate these tales of small town life, with their vivid characters, quirky situations, and memorable passages of dialogue. The charming short tales are accompanied by pleasant musical interludes, and though it can sound a little moist at times, Kossoff's deep voice is pleasant and well-modulated.

Beautifully performed stories

Stories written and told with understanding of human nature, but with a charming sense of humour. A lovely set of stories; one or two might be familiar, but the core of this work is the warm performance.
