Summary

Phryne Fisher drinks cocktails, dances the tango, is the companion of wharfies, and is expert at conducting an elegant dalliance. It's the 1920s in Melbourne and Phryne is asked to investigate the puzzling death of a famous author and illustrator of fairy stories. To do so, Phyrne takes a job within the women's magazine that employed the victim and finds herself enmeshed in her colleagues' deceptions. But while Phryne is learning the ins and outs of magazine publishing first hand, her personal life is thrown into chaos. While waiting for her lover Lin Chung's imminent return from a silk-buying expedition to China, she receives an unusual summons from Lin Chung's family followed by a series of mysterious assaults and warnings.

Critic reviews

"It's 1928, and the very unconventional Phryne Fisher sparkles with wit and champagne elegance ... Stephanie Daniel performs with genteel ease. Her upper-class Australian accents and her wild assortment of reputable and disreputable characters are truly amazing ... must listening." ( AudioFile Magazine)

The characterisation of the participants

The reader brought it all to life perfectly. She captures the mood of the age.

Away with the Fairies

Another terrific murder mystery, with Miss Fisher trying to find out the character of not only the murdered lady but also her fellow residents and work colleagues. With all this going on she is worried about her lover who has still not returned. Read brilliantly again by Stephanie Daniel.

I am binge listening to this series. Can’t wait to start the next one!

Both the stories and the narrator hold my full attention.

Jolly good fun

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and while I do my tasks I like to listen to audio books. My current favourite is the Phryne Fisher series! The books are well read and the mysteries and characters are entertaining without being too grim! Some of the more sensual scenes mean that I have to make sure I am not listening with my 6 year old in the room.

Brilliant!

So far this is my favourite book in this series. Phryne Fisher as always leaves me feeling that I wish I have lived in her time and place and that I could have been that brave.
Kerry Greenwood explains this book at the start, and it is good to hear the author reading this part.
This book has two stories within the one you have the death of a writer and the more about Lin Chung.
I became engrossed and very attached to all in this book and wanted to Phryne ?to get her man?
While worth a listen whether you are a first timer, or are just not taken with this book, its a lot better than in may first sound, and I am left with the wish that I could write just to be able to kill people off!
