Summary

Major Ernest Pettigrew (Ret’d) is not interested in the frivolity of the modern world. Since his wife Nancy’s death, he has tried to avoid the constant bother of nosy village women; his grasping, ambitious son; and the ever-spreading suburbanisation of the English countryside, preferring to lead a quiet life upholding the values that people have lived by for generations - respectability, duty, and a properly brewed cup of tea.

But when his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs Ali, the widowed village shopkeeper of Pakistani descent, the Major is drawn out of his regimented world and forced to confront the realities of life in the 21st century.

Easy listening

If you could sum up Major Pettigrew's Last Stand in three words, what would they be?

effortless, enjoyable, light

Would you be willing to try another book from Helen Simonson? Why or why not?

possibly

What does Bill Wallis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He is the epitomy of a retired Major, Bill makes the character believable and likeable.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand

A lovely joyful read, packed with dry wit and great insight into all different types of people. Thank you Helen Simpson! Lovely to read a book where tea has as much of an important place as in my own life.

Not my normal genre but I became hooked quite quickly. I loved the narration, I had a clear picture of all the characters. softly amusing and a strong enough plot to not want to put it down.

Fantastic

I really didn't know quite what I would make of this story but thought as it was one of the daily deals and therefore cut price I would give it a try.
Well, thank goodness I did, what a wonderful set of characters and a gentle story which weaves its way through them all.
I will be recommending this to anyone who will listen to me.

A different kind of love story

Any additional comments?

I'm always on the lookout for something different, and this twilight years love story was humorous, engaging and really refreshing.

Old world charm meets new world challenges, but some things don’t sit well in either world...

I loved absolutely everything about this book as it’s characters are both challenging and insightful. There is love, tenderness, humour and excruciatingly embarrassing behaviour, as the various story lines explore cultural barriers, religious bigotry, pride, prejudice, class, ignorance, greed, stupidity and much, much more; and all this is bubbling along, and occasionally irrupting, from under the rice paper thin surface of rural village life!

It’s a beautifully written, detailed and very engaging story by Helen Simonson. The narration by Bill Wallis was absolute perfection - just excellent. Highly recommended.

Good but a slow start

I did enjoy this book, but the hun obsession really slowed the book down, once we moved past that and the pace picked up it was rather enjoyable.
