Fantastic listen

The second in the trilogy is just as compelling, if not even more so. I love the narration which definitely adds to the overall experience and I love the fact that every single character has their place. I'm off to listen to "The City of Mirrors"...

Like The Passage? This is even better.

What made the experience of listening to The Twelve the most enjoyable?

My complaints about The Passage were few and far between, I did love the book, although it took a while to get going after the first part of the book when it jumped 92 years in the future with a whole new cast, as it took a while to get going again after it did this having to spend a lot of time introducing us to many new characters in a vastly different world. The Twelve avoids this and nearly every single page is edge of your seat listening.

The book opens up with a quick reminder of the events of The Passage and picks up 5 years later. Then the author throws us back 97 years to year 0 of the viral outbreak and the war with a mostly new group of characters, an old face from the first part of the passage as well as one or two others that we know a little about from the first book. This part of the book is incredible; it really does not waste its time in ramping up the action. The next part of the book brings us back to year 97AV with Peter and the gang. Again this last half of the book is brilliant.

The only niggle really is a brief section adding to the back-story for the man who was to become General Voorhees. It does end up being worthwhile but this small section does take a short while to get going.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Twelve?

The year 0 war has some stunning sections. The viral hordes wiping out cities, the air force bombing back the charging viral forms. Really incredible writing excellently performed.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His narration is amazing, he brings a lot of life to these characters and does not overdo the female roles. However, there is one character that he overdoes the accent for. The character is immortal, but if one person with an accent was around only other people with an American accent for a century, their own accent would eventually fade. There was no reason to do this. This is really nit picking though as the character in question only has a few lines. It just stands out more as the rest of the narration is so flawless by comparison

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

50% world war viral, 50% mad max with vampires. 100% awesome.

Or something like that.

Superb writing but a bit slow in places

There is no doubt that Cronin writes superbly and there are passages in this novel that are incredibly exciting and sometimes very emotionally affecting at the same time. I was genuinely in tears at least three times listening to this book. My only criticism is that at times it did feel a bit slow, but I wouldn't let that put you off - it is worth it for the overall experience. Scott Brick's reading of the novel is astonishingly good. I have actually tried to use some of his techniques in reading to my daughter and am enjoying the experience much more for it, so that is an unexpected bonus!

Amazing Sequel

I Loved the Passage and the twelve deepened my attachment to this series. It's full of character developments and interesting twists . It revisits old places in new ways, sheds new light to situations in ways I Just didn't expect . There's lots of new stuff too but I dont want to Spoil it for you. Scott Bricks voice is perfectly suited to this book too . Its the best book and audio book live read in a long time . Highly recommended .

Brilliant, brilliant sequel to 'The passage'

Unputdownable! So to speak. A gripping read by only Justin Cronin narrated effortlessly by Scott Brick. I struggled a little in some areas trying to keep up with who was who, but managed to work things out. The story is unique and thoroughly enjoyable.
I recommend it, but read 'The passage' first. Not for the faint hearted.

Bear with it

I loved The Passage and was eager to read this. I found it very confusing at first, I was convinced I'd accidentally skipped it forward but once I got my bearings and just listened to it I really enjoyed this. If you liked the first one (which you must read first) you'll love this. It's a good second book, am looking forward to the third.
