Summary

Berlin, Summer 2011. Adolf Hitler wakes up on a patch of open ground, alive and well. Things have changed – no Eva Braun, no Nazi party, no war. Hitler barely recognises his beloved Fatherland, filled with immigrants and run by a woman. People certainly recognise him, albeit as a flawless impersonator who refuses to break character. The unthinkable, the inevitable happens, and the ranting Hitler goes viral, becomes a YouTube star, gets his own T.V. show, and people begin to listen. But the Führer has another programme with even greater ambition – to set the country he finds a shambles back to rights.

Look Who’s Back stunned and then thrilled 1.5 million German readers with its fearless approach to the most taboo of subjects. Naive yet insightful, repellent yet strangely sympathetic, the revived Hitler unquestionably has a spring in his step.

Critic reviews

“Shockingly plausible” ( Die Zeit)
“Uproariously funny” ( Stern)
“Be warned. This book is funny. Very funny.” (Rebecca Morrison, Independent)
“An uproarious, disturbing book that will resonate long after you turn the final page” (Caroline Jowett, Daily Express)
“Clever, provocative and very entertaining. Hitler is a great, albeit monstrous, comic creation.” (Darragh McManus, Irish Independent)
“Julian Rhind-Tutt’s reading is beyond marvellous . . . Both funny and frightening, this is a subtle, historical study of the commanding nature of the fanatical demagogue, as well as a savage critique of contemporary western culture. It is a powerful and important book.” (Sue Gaisford, Independent)

a nightmare dressed up as a dream

Would you consider the audio edition of Look Who's Back to be better than the print version?

have not read print version. fantastic narration, one of the best I have heard in years.

Who was your favorite character and why?

hotel booker sabatsky because its becomes easier to see why people become enthusiastic for an ideology they know little about

Any additional comments?

recommend this book to anyone who has a vague psychological idea of how the whole human process of becoming involved in a movement bigger than oneself.

What a treat. An amazing concept, beautifully thought through with cheekily good narration. Highly recommended.

brilliant performance

If you could sum up Look Who's Back in three words, what would they be?

well performed , funny at start and middle excellent but I found then end ran out of steam and just lack a little for me. Brilliant concept- scary in its idea and totally believable in this media age. I would still recommend as brilliant performance and fantastic characters and definitely a morality tale that needs telling / idea needs exploring.

Have you listened to any of Julian Rhind-Tutt’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Always well told by Mr Rhindtutt - every audio book i have listened of his is always well performed. Really brought characters alive and voiced beautifully. Sardonic without being over the top just as the book required:one of my favorite narrators

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

gave me shivers

Excellent

A very funny and thought provoking book. The performance by the narrator is one of the best I've heard.

Bad ending

Good premise and story good but then just stopped. Why had he jumped? Would he go back? Did he succeed? Etc etc

Good, but slightly distasteful

Any additional comments?

It was an interesting concept, and quite entertaining, but I couldn't help feeling annoyed at myself for being drawn in to the idea that Hitler could do or say anything that would amuse rather than disgust. Of course, it was satirical, and Hitler's logic was inevitably flawed by his megalomania, so that you were mostly laughing at him rather than with him, but still seemed a bit of a betrayal to laugh at all. Oh, and the frequently incorrect German pronunciation bugged me!

Frighteningly funny!

A great but frightening book. Imagine Hitler waking up in Germany today and slowly but surely achieving super-star status - Laugh out loud in places but makes one think hard about the power of celebrity culture.

Interesting concept but hated the narration

Would you try another book written by Timur Vermes or narrated by Julian Rhind-Tutt?

no...

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

the concept was interesting but it didn't move very fast, it focused a lot on history which was fine to an extent but at times it laboured. The narrators voice just became too monotone for me....

How could the performance have been better?

I am not sure it could I think the book and narrator just wasn't for me...

If this book were a film would you go see it?

no just not gripping enough. I was over half way through and nothing had happened....

Good but lost it a bit

Brilliant book but felt it lost something about 3/4 of the way through. The narration however was totally awesome and truly made the story for me. He was a pleasure to listen too.

Mixing comedy with history & the 21st Century's emphasis on celebrity & soundbites. some insights into German culture

Mixing comedy with history & the 21st Century's emphasis on celebrity & soundbites. Allows some insights into German pop culture. Shows what happens when extremist opinions are mistakenly interpreted as comedic attention grabbing headlines. Be careful. That politician may actually believe the stuff he says to the media !
