Summary

It's a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she's ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart 18 years ago. Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her.

But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light, in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable. As Kat's hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she ever loved - her former fiancé, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained.

With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before, and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there. Read by Kerry Shale

Such a shame narrator spoilt it!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend the book, but would think twice about the audio version which is a shame.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator really needs to work on alternate voices for his characters. A lot of the voices were the same and they sounded either drunk, under the influence of something, or as thick as two short planks (even when the characters in the book were none of the above)

Never misses a twist or a surprise

Harlan Coben books deliver tight plots that are full of thrills and fun, in fast and light reading style that is deceptively easy to follow till he sends you tumbling into the next turn of events, the characters are perfect for the story and fit well with in this tale, this is entertainment and is entertaining without being melodramatic or unnecessarily violent, corny lines are exposed by other characters and soon you are just enjoying the yarn.
Kat is a detective whose father was murdered in the job, she likes drinking a bit too much, and is looking for a guy, her friend gives her and account in a dating service as a joke, she has a look and to her surprise finds the picture of an ex fiancée in the pages, she sends a message and nothing is what it was again.

my third Harlan Cohen book

it's getting abit formulaic, the women are always looking for love but don't know it, and there is a beauty like a centrefold as the friend. the stories themselves are good. but the female charcterisation is basic.

Good Twist!

I've read a few Harlan Coben novels and enjoyed them. This audio novel was a good listen, interesting characters, good twist. Some of the narrator's voices were a bit dubious but that's a personal response, he does set the emotion etc well.
Recommend it :-)
