Summary

Worldwide best-seller John Grisham will keep you on the edge of your seat with his most suspenseful thriller yet.

America's greatest storyteller brings us a new masterpiece of legal courage and gripping suspense - and his finest heroine since The Pelican Brief.

Donovan Gray is ruthless and fearless. Just the kind of lawyer you need, deep in small-town Appalachia.

Samantha Kofer is a world away from her former life at New York's biggest law firm. If she is going to survive in coal country, she needs to start learning fast.

Because as Donovan knows only too well, the mountains have their own laws. And standing up for the truth means putting your life on the line....

Not one of his best books fingers crossed there's another book to finishe this one

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

It needs a better ending

Do you think Gray Mountain needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, there's so many lose ends

The usual Grisham brilliance, nicely told.

If you could sum up Gray Mountain in three words, what would they be?

Captivating, emotional, gripping.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gray Mountain?

I don't want to say as I'll spoil the story, but when the narrator read the page I couldn't believe what she was saying! It's about half way through.

What does Catherine Taber bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

This was my first audio book. At first Catherine's pace seemed slow, but after a chapter or two it actually was perfect for the setting and made listening a real, and relaxed, pleasure.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I don't know.

Any additional comments?

This is one of Grisham's more 'small town' stories that really draws you in and makes you feel attached to the place. It's a great story too!

Not John Grisham at his brilliant best.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was weak and predictable. Grisham usually ends his stories in a far more imaginative way.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator used a monotone throughout. It was sometimes difficult to identify individuals in a dialogue.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No

Any additional comments?

The theme of this book was interesting and full of potential for storytelling. Having read or listened to all Grisham's books to date, this was the only one where the potential for a fascinating story was not realised.

Could this be a first?

Where does Gray Mountain rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'd rate this one a good to very good

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gray Mountain?

I knew from the 'net that the big coal companies were criminals, so this encouraged me to research further - they are worse than the book, if that is possible!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The opening few chapters were excellent. The style is almost documentary through this part.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Maybe could have been stronger for some of the characters, but overall quite acceptable

Any additional comments?

With such a weak ending that left me wishing for more, I wonder if this is the first and will have a sequel or even a series - not sure if John Grisham had ever done this?

Good

Got tired of main character not willing to commit to anything. But a good listen to look forward to in the car commute

Grisham on a Mission

What did you like most about Gray Mountain?

The obvious passion that drove the author to write it. He clearly hates the ravages that Big Mining has wrought in the Appalachian Mountains and describes it superbly.

What did you like best about this story?

It's not the courtroom drama I half expected (I do, after all, check the synopses of books before I 'read' them) but some of John Grisham's departures from his winning formula had an air of 'get me out of here' about them. This story had enough legal stuff to keep me listening and the passion kept me hooked from the start.

What does Catherine Taber bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

That accent!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several scenes in the book moved me - the heroine's sudden loss of her well-paid job in New York, her desperation to find another in the teeth of the recession, the death of a miner from 'black lung disease, the hopeless determination of eco-warriors - all good stuff.

Any additional comments?

Like Sycamore Row, I will listen to Grey Mountain again in a few months...

The Applalachian Travesty

Where does Gray Mountain rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I rank that book in the top ten of the audion books I have listened to. This is because I found the narrator's voice easy to listen to, the background to the main character's journey was historically accurate and gripping.

What did you like best about this story?

The best thing about this story is that it was not predictable. Several times, I was surprised by what the main character chose to do. She remeianed true to her personality, rather than the author going for the easy sentimental choice.

Which character – as performed by Catherine Taber – was your favourite?

The main character was the most interesting. Her personality and personal history was developed slowly and surely so that I continued to care about her and her journey.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I think that the tension between the main character and the legal brothers, which is something that ran throughout the story, held my interest. There was very little sexual tension. This allowed the story to focus on the brothers' perspectives on the travesty of the way big companies treat their appalachian miner.

Is it just me?

Would you try another book written by John Grisham or narrated by Catherine Taber?

I've been a fan of John Grisham for many years, but, apart from the main lawyer being female, there's just nothing new in Gray Mountain. I'm afraid I found it boring and struggled through to chapter 14 - but I'm off in search of a bit more excitement. Sorry John!

Non committal

Is Grisham bringing view point that normal human being is more selfish it affects them personally. Therefore, the main character is non committal till it impacted her.
