Critic reviews

"Two terrific female characters, both with secrets. Add Michael Robotham's clean prose and whipcrack pacing. The result? A book you won't be able to put down, although you may occasionally want to hide your eyes" (Stephen King)

"Robotham doesn't just make me scared for his characters, he makes my heart ache for them." (Linwood Barclay)

"Superbly exciting...." (Guardian)

Enjoyable but....

This is such a change of genre for this author that I actually found myself wondering if he really wrote it!
It is a good story and beautifully written characters whom I could not help but feel empathy towards.
However there are some inaccuracies to do with pregnancy and birth which I feel there is really no excuse for these days...not exactly difficult to research!
On the whole I enjoyed this but really hope that the author brings us more Joe O'Loughlin instead! Stick to what you're brilliant at 😉

A really entertaining read!

Man alive! I really loved this book from the very first chapter! And that’s saying a lot because the thing with me and audio books is that I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with them when it comes to fiction books. I don’t know why but I find audio books more appealing when listening to non-fiction, autobiographies and memoirs. When listening to fiction books, my mind sometimes wonders and I’ll suddenly come around realizing that I’m 10 minutes further into the book but yet I can’t remember what just happened. Well, that was definitely not the case with this one.

In a nutshell, this is a story about the unlikely friendship between two pregnant woman, and asks the question: How far would you go to create your perfect family? The book alternates between Agatha and Meghan's point of view, and so as the reader, you get to know both of these characters well, including their secrets, hidden desires and troubled pasts. I actually found this a rather strange novel for a male author to write as it was very heavily focused on pregnancy, babies, the desire to be a mother and the inability to conceive. The two main characters were also female. Having said that, the author does a marvelous job with this one and I really loved this audio book. If I have any criticism at all, it would be that the story may have been a tad far-fetched, and I found there were some loose strands by the end. It also didn’t have any twisty plot reveals that left me stunned, and which I normally love. But it was a very entertaining book that had me interested from the very first chapter and for that, I’ll give it 4 stars.

not bad

Gripping at the very beginning but more and more predictable as it cotinues. Really loved the voice of the reader.

Excellent, couldn't stop listening

I listened to this while decorating my front room and it really made the time fly by.
I had just finished another story I found so predictable and so was very impressed with the twist in this tale. highly recommended

Good

I have really enjoyed robothams previous books - this one very different and though I enjoyed it I don’t think it is as memorable - but I did like the narrator.
