Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Four by Scott Galloway, read by Jonathan Todd Ross.

For all that's been written about the Four over the last two decades, no one has captured their power and staggering success as insightfully as Scott Galloway.

Instead of buying the myths these companies broadcast, Galloway asks fundamental questions. How did the Four infiltrate our lives so completely that they're almost impossible to avoid (or boycott)? Why does the stock market forgive them for sins that would destroy other firms? And as they race to become the world's first trillion-dollar company, can anyone challenge them?

In the same irreverent style that has made him one of the world's most celebrated business professors, Galloway deconstructs the strategies of the Four that lurk beneath their shiny veneers. He shows how they manipulate the fundamental emotional needs that have driven us since our ancestors lived in caves, at a speed and scope others can't match. And he reveals how you can apply the lessons of their ascent to your own business or career.

Whether you want to compete with them, do business with them, or simply live in the world they dominate, you need to understand the Four.

Very insightful knowledge for living with the Four

This book brings up many points you may not have considered about the four. Shinning a light on them that is more scrutinising than most media that just idealises them.

Breezy look the big four Tech giants

If you could sum up The Four in three words, what would they be?

It’s subject: Tech, Innovation, Change
It’s quality : Breezy, punchy, fun

What other book might you compare The Four to, and why?

The Upstarts, The Everything Store, Move Fast & Break Things, Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs, and especially Nick Bilton’s excellent Hatching Twitter. All good-to-great Tech/innovation reads.

What three words best describe Jonathan Todd Ross’s performance?

Engaging & upbeat, but a little stilted & emphasis was often misplced. I will say, think they matched him to the tone of the book fairly well. A good, professional, but unexceptional performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it’s written in shortish, punchy chapters to compartmentalize the information, which I thought was handled rather well given we’re bouncing back & forth between four companies (and more in the final chapters).

Any additional comments?

Enjoyable, engaging, and occasionally genuinely insightful. I’m torn between thinking this could have used a far more rigorous, academic research approach, taking us a far deeper (it left me wanting a lot more background on all four of the companies, as well as more prognostication as to what’s on the horizon) and simply having enjoyed the experience of a short but sweet entry into the world of these disruptive, game-changing giants of our age. I’m used to reading more challenging fare (eg recent reads include Nick Bostrom’s Superintelligence, Niall Ferguson’s The Square & The Tower, Adam Rutherford’s A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived, various Steven Pinker etc), so this felt quite lightweight, but not unwelcome, and possibly this is exactly the pitch most people would want.

Insightful, entertaining, compelling

A fantastic insight into the workings of the big four with a wry, often amusing but skillfully constructed appraisal of how these companies operate and engage on the global stage with competitors, each other, customer and government.

Very Interesting

Hearing both arguments about how great these companies and how scarey they can be is very interesting. We all accept these companies into our daily lives - this gives food for thought.

Amazing insight

Loved the ideas and insight. Would've much preferred it being author read but it really made me think especially considering the time lapse since it was written

Thoroughly enjoyed the book

Very interesting and enjoyable.

A real eye opener as to the size of the 4 and how entrenched they are in our lives.

I especially enjoyed hearing about the specific aspects that make them so untouchable and forward thinking.

Food for thought in my own business.

Highly recommend this book!

A engaging book full of useful information.

A good book full of useful and relevant information regarding the big four.

Shows the history of the companies along with any possible future plans and possible upcoming developments. Really interesting look to see the big picture as to where these companies are heading and what their end game is.

Still up to date and current when I listened to it.
