Summary

The inspiration for The Comey Rule, the Showtime limited series starring Jeff Daniels premiering September 2020

The sensational number one bestseller about taking on the mafia, the Clintons and Trump.

In his Number One bestselling memoir A Higher Loyalty, former FBI director James Comey shares his never-before-told experiences from some of the highest-stakes situations of his career in the past two decades of American government, exploring what good, ethical leadership looks like, and how it drives sound decisions. His journey provides an unprecedented entry into the corridors of power, and a remarkable lesson in what makes an effective leader.

Mr. Comey served as director of the FBI from 2013 to 2017, appointed to the post by President Barack Obama. He previously served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, and the U.S. deputy attorney general in the administration of President George W. Bush. From prosecuting the Mafia and Martha Stewart to helping change the Bush administration's policies on torture and electronic surveillance, overseeing the Hillary Clinton e-mail investigation as well as ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, Comey has been involved in some of the most consequential cases and policies of recent history.

Critic reviews

[Comey] deftly, sometimes comically, captures the president as the inattentive, emotionally stunted, self-focused, absent-from-any-civic-sense, absurd fellow almost anyone in contact with him knows him to be… it is a story of probity, honour and virtue… Comey is an Avenger. (Michael Wolff)
Comey has quite a story to tell – and that’s even before we get to the Clinton and Trump chapters that have made this book an instant bestseller...The Trump win and what followed provides the material for the book’s most riveting chapters. Comey has a keen eye and his observations of Trump and his enablers are sharp…In today’s world, truth has become a precious commodity and those ready to risk their careers to defend it are few and far between. (Jonathan Freedland)
An urgent clarion call. (Edward Luce)

A principled man

I started listening to this book to hear about Trump and was in fact taken by this mans entire career and ethos.

A man trying and succeeding to live his life to higher principles than the people and politicians around him.

The FBI have lost a great, inspirational leader!

Thoughtful and well written.

The book provides a thoughtful and thorough look into Comey's experience in leadership, offerining his perspective of current and past events from a principled, if possibly naive, position.

Inside the Presidency

I love how James Comey went through all 4 presidency and in detail what it was like for all of them mostly, Trump, Bush and Obama, but you can tell how Bush and Obama were different than Trump. James Comey remained bipartisan throughout. We get to understand the intentions why he did what he did, even if it might cause Hillary to lose even though that was not his intention. If anything by the time of this book we can tell James Comey secretly wanted Hilary to win. Who knows, he hadn’t of opened the investigation days before the election he wouldn’t of been fired, because Trump wouldn’t of been president. Good book though! Would recommend it!

Extremely Good

Its not just about trump, but at the same time we dont have a million pages of when he was a child. There is integrity, entertainment, intrigue and mystery.

What comes across is someone really committed to 'do the right thing' and as we all know it cant be done with all of the people all of the time.

The desire to keep the executive separate to the legislature is highlighted and something lost on leaders used to getting entirely their own way before getting into politics.

Highly recommend

Really fascinating account of this man life and the impact of leadership

Loved this book, reminded me that the there are good people on all sides of the political debate, but most of all some have a devotion to public service.

comey has an important message.

This is a candid autobiography, with a few interesting revelations. Laid on a bit thick at times, maybe, a little idealistic, possibly, but most definitely eloquently written, making me laugh - mostly over blow by blow accounts of comey and trump, gasp and even cry. well worth a read/ listen.

A Hard Truth made easy to swallow

Excellent book. I have watched like an obsessed hawk the Trump administration. I share so much of what James Comey stands for. His book feels authentic and accurate. I respect his leadership values as he is now one of my favourite leaders. Trump is factually the most absurd president ever. He would not be tolerated anywhere in the private sector . Yet we tolerate him as potus as destroys the American democratic institution. I truly hope he is not inly publicly deposed but incarcerated and given the death penalty for his treason.

A great book

A great insight into to what is a mad chapter in the history of the US and the world and the thought processes of a man who had dedicated his life to serice to his country.
James Comey also narrates this giving this book and listening to his inflections adds another dimension to his vivid descriptions of the events in this book.
A must listen.

Everyone should read this book It gives a clear perspective of American politics and how people can abuse power. All over the world people need to look at the ethics of the people they are voting for
