Summary

The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of a multibillion-dollar start-up, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end.
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose start-up ‘unicorn’ promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood tests significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at $9 billion, putting Holmes’ worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: the technology didn’t work.
For years, Holmes had been misleading investors, FDA officials, and her own employees. When Carreyrou, working at the Wall Street Journal, got a tip from a former Theranos employee and started asking questions, both Carreyrou and the Journal were threatened with lawsuits. Undaunted, the newspaper ran the first of dozens of Theranos’ articles in late 2015. By early 2017, the company’s value was zero, and Holmes faced potential legal action from the government and her investors.
In Bad Blood John Carreyrou tells the story of Theranos and encourages us to consider the possible repercussions of our blind faith in a small group of brilliant individuals.
Now to be adapted into a film, with Jennifer Lawrence to star.

Critic reviews

"Wall Street Journal investigative journalist Carreyrou presents meticulously researched, clearly written evidence of the fraud perpetrated by business wunderkind Elizabeth Holmes. The former CEO of the once-renowned Silicon Valley startup, Theranos, bilked investors of millions and potentially risked the lives of patients around the world with a groundbreaking diagnostic product that did not work reliably. Will Damron is the perfect choice as narrator. His precisely articulated style makes the entire effort sound as if it is a cloak-and-dagger spy novel." (AudioFile)

Mind-blowing!

Hard to believe if it were fiction. The central character is a gift that never stops giving. Kudos to Carreyrou and the brave ex-employees that took this dangerous company to task.

Such an awesome read

Just finished listening to this book and loved it so much! I couldn’t put it down!

As a qualified Medical Scientist and Chartered Accountant, I loved that I could understand this book from both camps. I was in total disbelief that the fabrication went on as long as it did before the fraud was discovered. I found myself screaming at times “NOoooooooo” when the poor quality control testing was described.... I was literally on edge! The accountant in me couldn’t believe the mass negligence from a Corporate Governance perspective! Where was the Board????!!! And how could do many investors get so duped!!! Where was the due diligence!

I highly recommend this to anyone that has a keen interest in healthcare and enjoys understanding some of the things some companies and CEOs will go to in order to create smoke screens. Also a great read if you have an interest in understanding what poor corporate governance looks like!!!!

John Carreyrou is a very gifted writer and storyteller!!!!
