Summary

Why is it that even the most disorganised person never seems to lose their toothbrush?

How can this simple fact solve all our clutter problems?

The Toothbrush Principle is a simple yet inspired approach to de-cluttering your home. Whether you live in a mansion or a bedsit, this book will show you how to: organise according to the unconscious blueprint that naturally tidy people have, so that getting and staying organised is easy; know what to throw away with confidence; set up your wardrobe so you get much more use out of the clothes you have; work from home productively in a clear, designated space; tame your inbox!

Step-by-step, room-by-room, you'll soon find that you hardly ever lose things, massive clear outs become a thing of the past and you never spend more than 10 minutes a day tidying up.

So stop drowning in piles of clutter, learn how to be organised and start creating space to live out the life of your dreams!

Banish clutter

It really would have been better if it stayed more focused on what it suggested, clutter.

Dealing with 2000-era inbox problems, and the like, was a 1/3 of the book that is best chopped out.

Utility, completion, decision making, all a Myers Briggs type suggestion that is not for everyone. Just know your style before listening.

Helpful

Just common sense really but it did get me thinking differently about home organisation. I carried out the bathroom decluttering exercise whilst listening to the book, and it worked wonders. I have since been inspired to sort out a couple of other really cluttered areas of the house.

Enjoyable read; great narrator

I enjoyed reading this book. Great hand-holding tips for organising chaos or simply bringing more structure. Encouraging and compassionate. Smooth narrator. Some reviewers found that information was repetitive but I found it to be pitched appropriately to persons who struggle with poor organisation.

INSPIRATIONAL, FUN, STRUCTURED AND PRACTICAL!

If you could sum up Banish Clutter Forever in three words, what would they be?

Thanks Sheila! I feel I agree so much with all you say! Very intelligent approach. After Marie Kondo's book I needed exactly this kind of book. The purpose here is more functional which is perfect. We dont want to declutter to appear in a decoration magazine but for making our lifes easier among other things. Sheila nails it. Marie Kondo is good but has a more kind of simplistic and at the same time spirittual-energetic approach, she even gives soul to unanimated objects, which is good but a bit too much for me. Sheila instead is so realistic and practical. Structured and to the point. Very good and motivating book.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that it is enjoyable and helpful at the same time. I like her approach, functional and practical.

What does Lucy Scott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I loved listening to her. She puts emphasis where it is needed. She does a fantastic performance here and also in Marie Kondos book. Congratulations Lucy! I will buy other books if she is the narrator

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Unfortunately I cannot do that because of lack of time.

Any additional comments?

I would add a a couple of strategies more. I bought another book recommended by the author. I am reconsidering now not only decluttering and which things I keep and how should I oranise myself but also I have reviewed my style for envisioning more clearly who I want to become and what are the steps I need to do for a more minimalist life.

Loved this!

I loved this book so much that I went and bought the paperback version as well. It’s really inspired me to start making my house one that I really want to live in, making it a home as opposed to a mess! I can’t recommend this enough, it’s so inspirational, really easy to follow and not annoying like some clutter clearing books. I’m going to start to listening to it a second time and follow my paperback version highlighting the bits that are particularly important to me. I really really love the section on offices as it really helps you think about the way you organise your work too. Brilliant stuff and far better than Marie Kondo!

Love this book!!!

I love everything about this book.
The way it is read and the voice is so easy to listen to.
All the little hints and tips are so helpful and not to mention the little insight as to why we sometimes acumulate ‘stuff’.
I listen to this book whilst decluttering my house and it gives me so much motivation and logic whilst doing that. It almost makes it easier to decide what I no longer need and makes me excited for my need decluttered living space.

100% recommend 👍🏼

One to Keep

I LOVE this audio book. I listen to it regularly and have applied lots of these ideas into my life. The result is an organised home and office. I still have some ‘big’ one off jobs to do (filing cabinet) but know that when I schedule them in and do them (amazing chapter on organising your home office) they will never need doing again. I have finished my accounts (usually an overwhelming, last minute 6 months late job!!!) am alway on top of kids homework, laundry and all other chores (appointment diary bought and used as suggested marking off all jobs so as to leave realistic time scales). It sounds so simplistic but I am mother to 2 children (aged 8 & 13) and mostly on my own working part time with a partner away most of the time. Life is less stressful and I am happier living in an organised, tidy home. I cannot recommend this book enough. I will listen to it time and time again. Thank you Sheila Chandra.

Some really good ideas, plus some padding.

This book has a lot of really useful and helpful suggestions for de-cluttering, organizing and preventing re-lapsing into chaos. There's plenty of common-sense and some interesting little psychological hacks to try out. But particularly in the second half, there's also a fair bit of superfluous detail and cliches.

Overall - a recommend.

The narrator is a pleasure to listen to, her voice is like honey in your ear.

The best book on the subject I've read.

Very well read with excellent well thought out strategies. This is a real book, not one of those thrown together get rich quick guides. I highly recommend this if you want to make progress in living an organized life. I've made a start and it seems to be working for me.
