Summary

The Falklands War was one of the strangest in British history - 28,000 men sent to fight for a tiny relic of empire 8,000 miles from home.

At the time, many Britons saw it as a tragic absurdity, but the British victory confirmed the quality of British arms and boosted the political fortunes of the Conservative government. But it left a chequered aftermath; it was of no wider significance for British interests and taught no lessons. It has since been overshadowed by the two Gulf Wars, however, its political ramifications cannot be overestimated. Max Hastings’ and Simon Jenkins’ account of the conflict is a modern classic of war reportage and the definitive book on the war. Republished as part of the Pan Military Classics series, The Battle for the Falklands is a vivid chronicle of a call to arms and a thoughtful and informed analysis of an astonishing chapter in the history of our times. Max Hastings, author of over 20 books, has been editor of the Daily Telegraph and the Evening Standard. He has won many awards for his journalism, particularly his work in the south Atlantic in 1982.

A Good Account.

A solid account of the Falklands conflict. Personally not my favourite as it's a bit too heavy on the politics which I don't find as interesting. If you enjoy the political machinations then this is very descriptive.

An excellent short history

A well rounded history that focuses on the military and political spheres of action during the war, but includes as a preable a short description of the historical occupation and the claims of sovereignty. This is a British view of the war but includes some Argentine material and quotes.
Shame the audible version doesn't come with maps, I had to refer to wikipedia and Google Earth to understand the geography. I recommend the wikipedia page as an essential supplement to the audiobook, particularly the section on the Argentine cruiser Gen Belgrano which includes an enlightening clarification from Captain Hector Bonzo on the ships status as a legitimate target of war even outside the exclusion zone.

falklands conflict

If you could sum up Battle for the Falklands in three words, what would they be?

must have book

What other book might you compare Battle for the Falklands to, and why?

This is the first time ive bought one of these type of book,i got it in a buy 1 get 1 free offer very impressed.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Strangly, the first part of the book was the most interesting as i was unaware of just how close we came to loosing, right from the get go....even before the fleet set sail. But i have to be honest i only bought it for the actual fighting, and the conflict the rest was a bonus.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

falklands

Any additional comments?

This is a little gem,the person reading it is a bit stuffy, but you soon get into it,lots of info which i wasnt aware of,i enjoyed it, and will listen to it again at some point.
