Summary

In this dark, psychological thriller, Georgia Maguire pushes listeners to explore the furthest limits of their moral codes. If the circumstances were bleak enough, what would you be willing to do to protect the ones you love?

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?

Jack has looks and wealth; Grace has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do. You'd like to get to know Grace better. But it's difficult, because Jack and Grace are never apart.

Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.

Sometimes the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.

"This book just has to be huge.... I flew through it in two breathless sittings. Quite simply: astounding." (S. J. I. Holliday, author of Black Wood)

Just didnt empathise with main character

What did you like best about Behind Closed Doors? What did you like least?

Best - I'm struggling to be truthful. Least - I just didnt empathise with the main character, she was just too 'wonderful' and 'goody goody' and fabulously clever / thoughtful/ well-off..... and... boring. Thankfully it felt like the author got bored of writing at some point and speedily wrapped it up.

Would you ever listen to anything by B A Paris again?

Based on this it is unlikley

Would you listen to another book narrated by Georgia Maguire?

Not for me

Was Behind Closed Doors worth the listening time?

Sorry, it wasn't the worst, but I did find my self continually checking on how long was left and being a bit exasperated that there was still a chunk of time to go

Spoilt for me by the "am dram" narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend it as a story because I did enjoy that. The premise might seem far-fetched but the story is made quite believable.

What didn’t you like about Georgia Maguire’s performance?

Although she has a very clear reading voice, which is probably the most important thing, I'm afraid I found her attempt at the conversations to be especially annoying. Most of the characters seem to have twee accents from a 1960s radio play but the sister's carer, I think, is channeling Daphne Moon from Frasier. My "favourite", though, is the husband, Jack - I know he's the baddy but the narrator gives him a laughably exaggerated, low monotone. I kept expecting him to raise his cloaked arm over his face and go "mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!".

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No but I did look forward to hearing the next part when I had time.

Any additional comments?

This was my first audio book so I didn't know what to expect. I hadn't realised the narration would be such an issue or make such a difference. I'll be checking out reviews of "performance" for all future Audible purchases.

NARRATOR VERY OFF PUTTING

I found it very offensive that the narrator decided that a 17 year old young lady with Downs who the author has clearly indicated is intelligent is narrated like a small child. That to me is completely insulting and very offensive to anyone with a disability. Not stringing a full sentence doesn't mean the person would talk like a small child. Then there are the Thai staff who I'm not sure whether they are French or Italian but definitely not Thai. If you are going to try and do an accent it has to be authentic which this wasn't. I would have preferred the narrator to read normally rather than trying different accents and characters as they didn't work. I'm sorry I listened to this novel as I'm sure I would have loved it had I just read it myself. This has put me off listening to any further books as I'd rather not listen to other people's ignorant perceptions of people with a disability. I'm amazed this was allowed to be put out and nobody realised how offensive it was.

Quite an ending

Intense story from beginning to the end, a good read, the way the story was written, makes you feel the same pain and frustration as the main character of the story

Great plot

The plot is very cunning but sad initially. It evolves very cleverly to a peak, but then finishes very abruptly where there was room for more mystery and suspense.
A very easy listen - just 3 sessions for me - and absolutely superbly narrated.
