Summary

Audie Award, Narration by Author, 2016

Raised by unconventional Irish Catholics who knew "how to drink, how to dance, how to talk, and how to stir up the devil", Kate Mulgrew grew up with poetry and drama in her bones. But in her mother, a would-be artist burdened by the endless arrival of new babies, young Kate saw the consequences of a dream deferred. Determined to pursue her own no matter the cost, at 18 she left her small Midwestern town for New York, where, studying with the legendary Stella Adler, she learned the lesson that would define her as an actress: "Use it," Adler told her. Whatever disappointment, pain, or anger life throws in your path, channel it into the work.

It was a lesson she would need. At 22, just as her career was taking off, she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Having already signed the adoption papers, she was allowed only a fleeting glimpse of her child. As her star continued to rise, her life became increasingly demanding and fulfilling, a whirlwind of passionate love affairs, life-saving friendships, and bone-crunching work. Through it all Mulgrew remained haunted by the loss of her daughter until, two decades later, she found the courage to face the past and step into the most challenging role of her life both on and off screen.

We know Kate Mulgrew for the strong women she's played - Captain Janeway on Star Trek; the tough-as-nails Red on Orange Is the New Black. Now we meet the most inspiring and memorable character of all: herself. By turns irreverent and soulful, laugh-out-loud funny and heart-piercingly sad, Born with Teeth is the breathtaking memoir of a woman who dares to live life to the fullest, on her own terms.

wow

what a writer
such an easy listen ,live her voice. I'm heartbroken for her years of estrangement from Daughter, her now reconnected relationship gives me hope for my two adopted children.

Riveting!

This book was recommended to me and since I had enjoyed Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager I picked it up. I knew nothing about her other exploits as an actress and even less about her life. I feel an affinity toward her having also been born in Iowa to an Irish-American Family. But that is where the similarities end. Mulgrew has led a very interesting life, it’s true, with many, many twists and turns, but it is her handling of them and how she puts them into prose that make this book impossible to put down. Her own narration is, of course, masterful. Her writing is lyrical and moving, raw and honest and beautiful. I truly hope that her life continues on its current track of (seeming) positivity. I hope that her elder son comes around.

The long interview at the end conducted by Rosie O’Donnell is wonderful. Don’t skip it!

Engaging reflections on a rich, fascinating life.

Ms. Mulgrew takes us on a journey through her life and the key relationships that have been fundamental to her experience. Read beautifully by the author, we hear the inflections of emotion that pepper each story and communicate more than would be possible through text alone. I absolutely recommend listening to the book rather than, or at least as well as, reading the text.

Fantastic

A blisteringly honest memoir, one of the best I've ever read. Mulgrew's narration adds a new depth, and the writing is often like poetry in its beauty. Mulgrew has led an incredible, eventful life, a full rollercoaster of emotions.

I found myself avoiding her Wikipedia page, because I was scared of spoilers, and getting emotional about things in her career that I already knew happened! Highly recommended - I made my boyfriend buy & listen to it too, and then we both bought copies for our parents for Christmas.

I will also be seeking out other books that she's narrated.

What a Performance!!!

I bought this as I loved Captain Kathryn Janeway! And Red!
I immediately loved Kate's voice. Her timbre is so beautiful and I tealised immediately that the character she portrayed when I was a teenager whe showed me the strength I had never seen on a screen from a female before was a reflection of her own character!
What incredible emotion and expression is PILED into this reading, I found myself listening compulsively every opportunity I got to this journey, honestly and openly given as a gift to us. I have never read or heard a memoir before and being given access to the strengtgh and wit of this indomitable woman has been an emotional rollercoaster. To say I loved Captain Janeway would be a understatement but I now find that the woman behind the character is what really drove that acting!
I loved this so much I have immediately bought her next book!
