Amazing

I had no idea what to expect. at first I thought it would be a light listen but it turns into a funny but Frank assessment of his life. for all the highs and lows you may think you know about, this book explains what a tormented human Richard Pryor was. l

Essential listening

Okay, so, to address the two most common gripes in other reviews:

1) "It's not a laugh a minute!". No, of course it's not; Richard Pryor was a human being, and this is his honest autobiography! There *are* plenty of laughs, but no, not every page is stuffed with them. Unsurprising when you consider that the raw honesty sees subjects such as being abused as a child, racism, being an abuser of women himself, and living with MS come up.

2) "The reading is poor". Are you *kidding* me?? No, JD Jackson doesn't have Richard Pryor's voice - he's not an impressionist - but for me, he's captured Pryor's rhythm and heart with amazing skill. I'm much more impressed with the performance than I expected to be.

This autobiography reveals the depth and complexity of Pryor's life and personality. He did things that can not, and should not, be excused; something that it seems he would quickly agree with himself. One important takeaway is that he was a ferociously intelligent man and, in addition, he was strong enough to admit his own failings when he was finally in a position to see them. This is absolutely essential listening for fans, and I strongly recommend it to non-fans, too - this just might spark your interest in his work.

interesting story

interesting story but very much expected as Richard Pryor lived a lot of his demons in the public eye. still worth a read though if your a fan or buddin comedian.

Richard

Don’t usually like comedy books but this one caught my eye because it more his life story. One thing that shone through is he’s brutally honest about himself. The good the bad and the ugly

Another illegitimate junky...

Sadly, a man who had the chance to change the world. But was raised like a dog, and acted like one. Clearly propped up all his life to be the payer for everybody around. Could have been Malcolm x but chose to be the monkey in a box dragged out for enjoyment only. Same MO as any other. Bad whitey getting him down. not that he had not paid tax or child support being his failure as a citizen or human being. Excellent at making money, but such a disappointing read. I hopped he was more...
