Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Soldier Spy by Tom Marcus, read by Jason Langley.

In the boot were six homemade pipe bombs, all linked to detonate at the same time from a single call on a brand-new pay-as-you-go phone found on the target.

Special Branch also found Chinese Type 56 assault rifles with eight full magazines of ammunition. His target was a local school. He planned to attack two coaches of teenagers returning home after a school trip to France. Approximately 60 children, their accompanying teachers and their waiting parents. He was going to kill them all.

'My world was dark, no colour, no right or wrong and no backup. People like me exist to fight those no one else dares face. I wasn't the last resort; I was the only option.'

Tom Marcus was recruited by MI5 in the wake of the 7/7 attacks on London. After five years spent undercover as part of a covert British Army special operations unit, he offered the Security Service the edge they so desperately needed. Following months of intensive training, Marcus was thrown into a world of relentless, unimaginable pressure, a never-ending struggle to prevent terrorist atrocities on our city streets, foil devastating strikes against the nation's infrastructure, and keep our country's secrets safe from foreign spies. Split-second decisions carried life or death consequences. And not all his colleagues would survive the fight.

In this explosive firsthand account, Soldier Spy lifts the lid on the war being waged by MI5 to keep us safe in our towns and cities for the first time - a blistering, visceral insight into life on the front line against terror, revealed in never-before-heard detail.

It was a job which would inevitably exact a heavy price. But when it came down to it, Marcus knew he didn't have a choice.

'Some people join the service out of a sense of duty, some out of wanting to do some good by removing the evil. I did it because it's all I knew. I'm a hunter of people, and I'm damn good at it.'

Best book I've ever read!

I know that's a bold statement but I was heartbroken to finish this book. Absolutely brilliant from the first second. I will be telling everyone about this. The narrator nailed it as well! 10/10

On The Edge

Insightful story of an MI5 surveillance officer. From his time in the military through to his time in MI5, we get an idea of the tense and stressful life led by Tom Marcus. A sad loss to the world of intelligence but I dearly hope Tom gains even more from continuing to write about his time the security services.

Exceptional audio book!

I'm new to audio books, this being my second. I have a 2 hour commute and was fed up with constantly changing songs or the radio so I've turned to the audio book which I'm loving.

I've found this book exceptionally engaging in all area's, it helps that the narration to a very high standard. Jason Langley and his plethora of voices a d accents from male, female, Welsh, scouse keeps it interesting. The story is gripping and keeps you on your toes. I'll be back to finish off his other books and that, I'm looking forward to!

A spy with an ego

This was a pretty interesting book to listen to and I can honestly say that I was hooked, the story is very fast paced and immerses you into the world of an MI5 covert operative going through his initial service in the army before his eventual recruitment into MI5.

There are some sections of the book which are a bit hard to believe. His move into special operations in the army didn’t quite seem right, nor did some other elements charting progress into MI5 which all felt a bit fictionalised. Otherwise it feels like a meteoric rise through the army and does not fit with what other writers have said about their experiences in the modern army, especially their transition into special forces being a gruelling selection process rather than something you just fall into. Though I take that as I find it, maybe that is how it worked for him at that time.

What was a bit hard to swallow was the ego of the writer who probably did not intend to be perceived this way, though he has an attitude throughout that presents him with a very high opinion of himself. Repeatedly referring to how good he is at his job without very much humility. What also stuck is that he comes across very much like a thug with an anger management problem. Admittedly that might have its role in the job of an operative, though it often read as though he was a loose cannon with little respect for his superiors and a belief that ultimately he knew best. Something about that made me really wonder whether this was something that was exaggerated for the sake of making him appear more like a classic maverick or whether he somehow slipped through the usual screening process.

That being said, this was a really enjoyable book to listen to though the ending was just far too abrupt. I felt like there should have been at least a chapter to wrap things up, whereas it felt that the writer decided five minutes was sufficient.

As the author would say “f**king incredible”

This is one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. And that is because it is so unique, unlike any other book, or even tv show, movie or any media stream out there. It’s about the experience of a man in an intelligence agency, something that Hollywood nor anyone else can recreate. It’s filled with even the darkest, most disgusting aspects of the job to the heroic, nail biting parts. It features death, trauma, adrenaline and suspense.

This narrator was clearly picked for his accent, but his delivery is impeccable.

TC is a hero. Many may misinterpret his confidence and his honesty for arrogance and superiority, when in fact his is simply stating facts on what is needed in his field. Surgeons are confident and cocky because that’s what the field demands, even if it means they are less empathetic than physicians and GPs. That doesn’t mean they are “better” doctors, they simply do a different job. Certain professions demand certain personalities, and it is this above all that makes me trust this book and author through and through.

The layout of the book is good, it features the journey of the author, and is intertwined periodically with a thrilling mission. This audiobook was so gripping that a moments distraction demanded a rewind as you simply can’t miss a word.
