Summary

Ruth was a ghost of a girl when she arrived into foster mother Maggie Hartley's care. Pale, frail and withdrawn, it was clear to Maggie that Ruth had seen and experienced things that no 11-year-old should have to, that she had been conditioned to 'see no evil, speak no evil'.

Ruth is in desperate need of help, but can Maggie get through to her and unlock the harrowing secret she carries? Through love, reassurance and patience, Maggie starts to unravel Ruth's painful past - a past defined by cruelty and abuse by the very people who should have protected her.

Raised by a cruel stepmother and her father after her own mum abandoned her, Ruth was abused, underfed and ignored while her half siblings lived a life of luxury. It's up to Maggie to help Ruth find her voice - to be a ghost no more and bring those who have harmed her to justice.

Utterly heartbreaking

It absolutely disgusts me what some parents can do their children! I wish Ruth lots of love and happiness in her life.

Heartbreaking, but wonderful story

Maggie's books are always excellent. Ruth is such a brave young girl, and I so so hope that life is kinder to her now and that she's been able to build a better future than the past she left behind.

My favourite from Maggie Hartley yet

This was my first Maggie Hartley audio book and I have to praise the narrator. She has a lovely flowing tone which is very well adapted for each character. I find narrators of audio books often struggle with children’s voices and end up sounding ridiculously babyish but this was a great performance throughout and I got real sense for each character.
The circumstances around how Ruth lands in foster care is tragic but Maggie works her magic as always and I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Another sad but interesting and great listen

I do love these Maggie Hartley books and Penelope McDonald listens. The Narration is really lovely as she has a kind of soothing voice which helps when listening to such sad stories . Mostly these stories work out for the children with Maggie's great and dedicated work . I feel I learn a lot from these books and as someome who works with kids I find them quite and education and interesting.
