Summary

Twelve Years a Slave is an account of actual events that took place in the life of Solomon Northup, during the pre-Civil War era of the 1840s. It follows the trials and tribulations of an educated African American man that was born into freedom and later kidnapped, taken away from his family, and forced into slavery.

His story brings to life a shockingly common practice that took place during those times. In his journey, Northup, who is a native of Saratoga, New York, and has a wife with three kids, gets lured into leaving his home town by two circus promoters who ask him to accompany them to Washington, D.C., while getting paid to perform at a musical gig.

This trip, which he thought would only take a few days turned in to an unimaginable voyage of deceit and great misfortune. Those few days turned into 12 long years, in which Northup was placed back into slavery in the isolated plantation country of Louisiana's Bayou Boeuf where he quickly learned that the mere mention of his past freedom would result in severe punishments or possibly his own death.

His story takes a drastic turn when a heroic friend risks his own life to help deliver the news of Northup's whereabouts to his wife, in order to help him regain his freedom. This heroic act could ultimately get Northup killed or help return him back home, to his family and freedom.

2nd time listening. Will listen again

Excellent performance by the reader who has the perfect voice for this part. Slow, clear and empathetic to the story. The story is a heart wrenching experience of Solomon and an in detail account of the life of a slave. Their work, lives and dreams. certainly a tear jerker and I am truly inspired by Solomons character and attitude during his time in captivity. Amazing man. God used it all to enable him to help so many others after him.

A must read.

A account of terrible suffering, peppered with acts of kindness, told honestly yet without gratuitous detail. The narrator’s warm delivery, making it all the more moving, & piercing to the heart.

Powerful story

A testament to the evil people will do to other human beings if they believe the law allows it.

Slavery as it was experienced

For me this was a book better listened to than read. When I attempted to read the book I struggled to empathise with Solomon because I felt I could not do him justice. The narrator helped me cross this bridge somewhat. The contents of the story are varied from horrific to bazaar but i think it’s strength comes from its truth

better than the filn

This book was incredible to listen to. A paper book I struggled to get into but the clear and friendly voice of the reader captivated me to understand the depths of emotions and struggles of Solomon. His intelligent writing and word use is spoken so well on this audio book. and it feels as if Solomon is with me sharing his terrible but wonderful story. definitely will listen again
