An engrossing and challenging collection!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I thorough recommend this audiobook for a variety of reasons: Howard Jacobson's incisive, challenging and engaging polemic, his wit, his fearlessness in tackling controversial themes and his delight in, and skilled use of, the English language. Some of his essays, particularly when he writes provocatively and wisely on terrorism I found so important that I have bought this volume in print so that I can refer to it [and quote from it!] with ease. in addition, Howard Jacobson reads superbly and engages his listeners throughout.
What other book might you compare Whatever It Is, I Don't Like It to, and why?
I can't compare it to another book as this collection is so fresh and challenges the listener's prejudices [and intelligence] so vividly.
What does Howard Jacobson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
As above, he reads what he has written, understandably, with grace and immediacy. As explained, I have bought the book in print to refer to easily in future - but the audiobook was seminal.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both! His subjects vary from the very funny to the very serious and he has the ability to move us emotionally in both directions.
Any additional comments?
If you are hesitating, do buy this audiobook - it is a treat and ideal for journeys as each essay is discrete.
