Summary

Set in the same world as the New York Times best-selling Jane Yellowrock novels, an all-new series starring Nell Ingram, who wields powers as old as the earth.

When Nell Ingram met skinwalker Jane Yellowrock, she was almost alone in the world, exiled by both choice and fear from the cult she was raised in, defending herself with the magic she drew from her deep connection to the forest that surrounds her.

Now, Jane has referred Nell to PsyLED, a Homeland Security agency policing paranormals, and agent Rick LaFleur has shown up at Nell's doorstep. His appearance forces her out of her isolated life into an investigation that leads to the vampire Blood Master of Nashville.

Nell has a team - and a mission. But to find the Master's kidnapped vassal, Nell and the PsyLED team will be forced to go deep into the heart of the very cult Nell fears, infiltrating the cult and a humans-only terrorist group before time runs out....

The trees will drink your blood

This spin-off series from the Jane Yellowock books features Nell Ingram who we first met in the JY novella "Off The Grid". Some time has passed since the events of that story and Nell finds herself more and more under threat from the Lords Cloud Church and under siege. The consequences of her helping JY has come back to bite her, and the menace has subtly changed. So naturally she is a bit gun-shy when Rick "Ricky Bo" Lefleur and Psyled come calling.

As the events of the book unfold it is quite clear that Nell is isolated by her past, her location, by inclination, culturally and her woods, - her Soulwood. For example she has never tasted Pzza or Krispy Kreme donuts - both of which she finds devine.

It also becomes clear that she doesn't understand the scope of her gifts nor is she used to taking action. Many of the situations that she finds herself in you know absolutely that Jane Yellowrock would know how to handle those situations or fly by the seat of her pants. With Nell not so much. While not totally helpless she isn't used to fast paced action and thinking on her feet. It is this contrast that makes Soulwood different from the Skinwalker series and all the more enjoyable for not being a JY clone.

Just one aside, Rick really ought to consider some counselling for Nell - in one way or another she has suffered mentally and emotionally and may be suffering from borderline PTSD.

Brutal has never been written better

First, I need a hug. Have read/listened to rather a lot of really good books lately. Blood of the Earth does not make them worse, those other stories still are wonderful. But “gosh”, I would never listen to, or read, such a grim story without it being this fabulously well written. Faith Hunter is a gem. But heck, stories about women being mistreated make me so miserable. And this story is the most grim one I have ever listened to, as I am not in the habit of torturing myself. Ye, ye, everything about this story is perfect. Superb storytelling (not kidding), superb … everything (as kind of already said). And if you are more gutsy than me, this is a must read. The story kind of is a must read/listen for women as little gutsy as me too, but borderline - ish. Kinda listen at your own risk. And remember you will need a hug after. But, even if so, a fabulous story written masterfully. But I really hope Faith Hunter has a good psychologist, and can I get her number?

Promising start.

This book starts out slow but stick with it, it's worth it. This is a very promising start to a new series, and a great spin off from the Jane Yellowrock series. The characters are well written as usual and the story was good. Hvam did an excellent job as always and really helped to bring the characters and the story to life. Will definitely be getting the next book.

Unusual and interesting characters and story line.

Liked the storyline and Khristine's narration was excellent as always. Well worth the money all round.

Struggled at first the the narrators accent

Struggled to get into the story at first due to narrators accent, however once in full flow I loved the book, had me gripped and on the edge of my seat.
I may read the one in the series rather than audio.

Slow start but worth the effort

It took me quite a while to get going on this book but as I have really enjoyed Jane Yellowrock I persevered. Worth it in the end. Looking forward to seeing how this series will evolve as I start the next Soulwood which was conveniently released yesterday!

Liked Yellowrock? You'll like this!

Earth magic - not witch magic. An interesting take on magic and the supernatural, that leaves great possibilities for development in coming books.

Story is solidly based in the Jane Yellowrock world. Filled with mostly new and interesting characters. A bit heavy on the church / cult theme perhaps, but all in all a "First Book in a Series" that makes me want to listen to another one from the now well established Faith Hunter / Khristine Hvam "team".
