Summary

When a mummified foot, a pile of bones, and a split skull are discovered in a Danish bog, is it a case for the police or archaeologists? It becomes a case for chief inspector Tobias Lange when it is confirmed the remains are those of a young male, early twenties, beaten to death with a blunt instrument about two decades earlier.

Tobias finds himself on the trail of eco-warriors, Sami protesters safeguarding reindeer rights in Lapland, and a disaffected young woman estranged from her family. Then another incomplete set of human bones turns up, and then another. When the trail takes a turn into a murky world of sex trafficking and illegal immigrants, Tobias starts to fear for his eco-warrior daughter Agnes.

Very good narrator.

I enjoyed the story but the 'twist' was relatively obvious from fairly early on. I am an avid reader/listener to this genre so I expect I am tuned in to spotting the culprit.

Any additional comments?

Human bones and a mummified hand are found in a lake by a golf course together with a few odd items, including an engraved silver bracelet. The remains are found to have been those of an unknown male, around early 20s in age and the jewellery promises to be the best way of identifying him. So begins a police hunt in Denmark and surrounding countries for answers to the murder. Meanwhile, there is also a violent sexual predator about, targeting female prostitutes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was well written, with fully rounded and believable characters, especially Tobias, the main protagonist, a detective separated from his wife and conflicted between his police work and his student daughter's involvement in ecological demonstrations. The reader is taken right inside his head as he shifts focus between work, family concern and hopes of ending his own loneliness. The police procedural is fascinating, too. But it did seem flawed by the earlier overlooking of something which, to me at least, seemed obvious but was barely mentioned.

The narration by Andrew Wehrien was excellent, clearly read, well paced and the different characters nicely differentiated. And a pleasant voice. However, only four stars awarded as it felt as if the whole recording had been speaded up: easily resolved by slowing down to 0.75 on Audible, but initially irritating.

I was gifted this book by the right's holder, via Audiobook Boom. My thanks for this. I had not previously read anything by R. I.Olufsen but will certainly watch out for other of his titles in the future.
