Summary

This is the film tie-in edition of the story by Annie Proulx, now a movie starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Randy Quaid, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams.

Brokeback Mountain is set in the beautiful, wild landscape of Wyoming where cowboys live as they have done for generations. Hard, lonely lives in unforgiving country. Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar are two ranch hands, "drop-out country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, tough spoken", glad to have found each other's company where none had been expected. But companionship becomes something else on Brokeback Mountain, something not looked for, something deadly.

Critic reviews

"A timeless story that stands up to repeated listening and will stay with listeners long after they've finished the hour-long [audio]." ( AudioFile)
"Proulx's understanding is at its most remarkable in the astonishing Brokeback Mountain. [She] knows what she could only know...by the infrared that allows a very few writers clear sight in the dark of the imagination." ( New York Times Book Review)

Surprising different, and touching

I belong to a book club and this was the latest nominated book for us to read. I had of course heard of the film and vaguely knew the storyline. I liked the voice of the narrator which is always a good start with an audio book. How refreshing to listen to a what is basically a love story but yet so different , not simply because it is of two men but because of the lifestyle, era and society that they lived in. A thoroughly good read and very touchingly intense.

A speedy overview into a by-chance relationship

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would as a complementary piece to the film.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack, he is an idol of bravery and challenging for what feels right to himself. The way he cherishes and looks to the future when the future does not look kindly on him.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

In Jack's room, it's quite a powerful scene.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me sad, to listen to a story that did not work because of prejudices of old times.

Any additional comments?

I found it peculiar how the audiobook seems to go through the story a lot faster than the film in terms of the scenes. Expecting a descriptive chapter about the scenery, the feelings, etc. It goes to show how the direction added more to my expectation. The audiobook refers to many significant scenes/pieces of their history as in the past but in the film you can see them happen and connect them to their feelings later on. I find it interesting.

Rushes it's set-up

This is not a bad story and once out of it's first third it settles into nice pacing and character development, but the gear change from hanging out on the mountain to the sex scene in the tent is too abrupt. It would be a big risk for both men and it's always rung a little flat and hollow.

Superb telling of a touching story

Superb narration with character voices that resemble the film actors. A really touching story that stays with you.

A heartbreaking tragedy, beautifully read.

For me, this is a great spoken-word adaptation of a provocative but human novel. Proulx’s prose works SOO well with Campbell Scott’s true and sensitive reading. It’s a perfect marrying of word into aural.

My heart

I absolutely did not expect it to be this good.

I never read books this short so I foolishly thought it would not make an impact on me.

Boi was I wrong 😭

The movie did a spectacular job adopting this story. Now I want to watch it again 🥲

The writing was so beautiful I am going to look for more short and brilliant books like this in the future.

Still has the power to make me cry after all these years

Still has the power to make me cry after all these years.

I first read Close Range almost 15 years ago and, whilst all of the stories contained are marvellous, the clear and just standout is Brokeback Mountain.

Looking for a quick read on a restless night, I returned to the standalone Brokeback Mountain and was once again absorbed by it, after feeling the years may have somewhat dimmed its power.

A truly heartbreaking story that is so beautifully written and one which does, even after all those years of knowing the plot so well, still have the power to make me cry.
