Summary

A skeleton is found in a shallow grave in the churchyard. But this was not an official burial.

The victim was murdered decades ago. At the same time, Detective Nikki Galena and her team are investigating the brutal slaying of local businesswoman Madeline Prospero. She was a member of an exclusive and secretive drinking club called The Briar Patch. But they've got no suspects and no one is telling them the truth.

Meanwhile, the buried skeleton leads them on a trail to the village of Quintin Eaudyke. This is a troubled place. In the late 70s and 80s a reign of terror and abuse was unleashed on the close-knit population. When more women from The Briar Patch come under threat, Nikki faces a race against time to stop more murders.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you in suspense until its heart-stopping conclusion.

Wrong accents

The narrators accents ruined the book for me as none seemed to be from the area where it was set. The whole Lesbian theme was over worked and felt contrived beyond belief. The author’s repetitive use of so and so “ran their hand through their wavy / straight / curly / wiry / spiky / balding / red / brown / auburn / blond etc hair ad nauseam was really irritating and desperately needs a good editor to get rid of that sort of nonsense. The story started well but due to the multitude of characters, it lost its way and the end was contrived and rushed. Disappointing overall.

Narration horrendous

As with all of these books the narration totally spoils it. The regional accents are bad. The Scottish accent in this book is beyond belief - like something out of a pantomime. Out of character the narration is just boring. Not sure why I’m sticking with the books - the narration detracts from the stories so much.

still dreadful performance

sadly Henrietta Miere's performance make this book, like the others in this series, so painful to listen to.

Change the narrator

I've listened to all the previous books including this one. The stories are pretty good, easy to listen to at work. But my God's the narrator, really should give up the day job, as the narration, she's got a nice voice, but when she tries to do accents, she's so far off the mark it's not even laughable. Also mispronunciation of some words, which is madness. The book would be so much better if either someone can ACTUALLY do accents seamlessly, or if the current narrator just didn't bother.
Also the speed, I dunno of she used to work at Lidl and has this desire to do everything at top speed, but to make it listenable I had to slow it to 0.85

Poor regional accents

Story good, shame about the narration. The Irish accent was laughable, not sure what some of them even were.

The reader needs to go

This is based in the fens but most characters have a strange northern accent. Some are difficult to understand and the characters are not discernable. I have had to give up listening to the book for the 2nd time. I have read the others in the series and love them so I shall have to return to that format as by 2 hours or more in, I still have no idea who anyone is or what is happening. Such a shame and doesn't reflect well on the author

terrible narration, badly written

Narration like a machine gun and far too many "she said sighing..." " she said combing her hands through her thick/ curly/wavy hair.." "she said sitting down.." and the lesbian thing, what's that all about? too contrived.

Buried this one

I enjoy Joy Ellis' other series, but Audible should have listened to their listeners about this one. Meirs is a perfectly competent narrator and for a different type of book she will probably be a delight, but oh dear it's like nails on a chalkboard here. After 2 hours I am giving up.
