Great story but better in print
What would have made Captive Prince better?
Whilst I can appreciate Stephen Bel Davies as a narrator, he just didn't work here for me as his voice is not one I associate with a fantasy such as this - his voice is too 'classy' for want of a better word and in my opinion this needed a grittier, rougher approach.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Captive Prince?
The story is one of my absolute favourites so I enjoyed the book, but probably because I had already read it in print and was drawing on my own mental world building from having read it before.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Stephen Bel Davies?
Hmmm.. I have my favourites, but probably Joel Leslie or Greg Tremblay, who I honestly believe can narrate anything and I'd love it. From previous audios (Necromancers Tale/Guarded etc) I think their tone and range of accents would have suited this better. Like I said, Stephen Bel Davies has a pleasant voice to listen to, but I'd pitch him more for a slick spy thriller than this type of story. I'd check out other SBD narrations - this was a case of poorly matched narrator-to-story for me rather than bad narration.
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not really for me - I was disappointed that the audio didn't live up to my own expectations of how I imagined the CP world to be since this didn't come across for me and I need to be immersed in a story to appreciate it in audio-form.

The story is amazing so far and the reading is good. However at some points during the audiobook it sounds as if a different person is saying an individual word or as if the reader has taken a step away from the microphone for a single second.
Not a huge issue but distracting enough that I wanted to mention it.
But on the whole very impressed.

How could the performance have been better?
I had issues with the performance at times in that the narrator would suddenly get very quite so it became very hard to hear especially while driving on the highway over the holidays. I had to turn up the volume almost as high as it would go which is headache inducing. Otherwise besides it was hard at times to distinguish voices and the narrator also had a very bored cadence to his voice. I am hoping book 2 is better

Excellent piece, just be cautious
This is one of my favorite trilogies I've ever come across. It has incredible reread value and where the summaries make it out to be far more scandalous than it actually is, it's an extremely immersive political thriller romance.
It does have a lot of content in it that can be difficult to stomach (really only in the first book with slight smatterings in the second and third), but it never glorifies it and it's always presented to be interpreted as negative and as a plot point for future development. Basically, if you managed to watch Game of Thrones, you should be fine here. It certainly isn't a piece for everyone but it is so incredibly satisfying when you read them through and through.
The characters make such an incredible journey and they are such wonderful compliments of one another that keep you gripped and, especially in the first book, you wonder how things could possibly be different or change.
I could sing praises forever about the book but I suggest people just read it if they're curious enough. The narrator is not bad, though I don't necessarily agree wi
