Summary

Charity Stratton's bleak childhood is changed forever when both her parents are killed in a fire. Separated by the authorities from her younger brothers and sister, Charity is sent out to work as a skivvy in a boys' boarding school. Her loneliness and misery are eased when she falls deeply in love with the dashing but fickle sixth-former Hugh Mainwaring, but when she discovers she is pregnant with Hugh's baby, she soon realises just how alone she really is.

Determined to be reunited with her siblings and to make something of herself, Charity runs away to 1960s London and begins to forge a new life.

I was hoping two characters would get caught

and I was hoping Daniel would turn up . It was excellent I needed a few loose end tied up.

Loved it!

If you could sum up Charity in three words, what would they be?

Gripping, moving, compelling

What was one of the most memorable moments of Charity?

I'll try not to say too much because I don't want to spoil the story.... 1 word - Daniel!
Heart wrenching!

What about Julia Franklin’s performance did you like?

She says some words in a peculiar way (words with a G in the middle in particular) and some of her accents are a little strange... which did put me off a little, BUT overall very good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

"The children" and Daniel.

Any additional comments?

This is the 2nd book I have read for LP's and all I can say is I want to read more!
(The first book I read was A Lesser Evil and according to many reviews, it is not her best).
I enjoyed both immensly and look forward to reading more! I have used my last couple of credits to buy the ones here and recently bougt another whilst out shopping.
That reminds me - - I must check the Kindle store *shoots off to check*

4.5 Stars!

Loved this from Lesley Pearse. This story has absolutely everything thrown into it - romance, crime and family drama. The characters are well thought out and you can't help feeling for all of them individually. The romance side of things is very erotic compared to other Lesley Pearse books and some of it was a bit distasteful but perhaps that was because I had the audiobook version of this book. This book only lost a star from me because I found some of the scenes too graphic and were hard bits to read/listen to but overall another cracking read from Lesley Pearse.

Excellent story

A wonderful gripping story, as are all of Lesley Pearse's books, with that lovely warm feeling at the end.

Lesley Pearse at her best

Another gripping book from Lesley Pearse, unfortunately the narrator slightly let it down for me. Very monotone.

Fantastic

Loved this long and winding story so much ….would recommend this if you like stories with lots of twists and turns. Also amazing narration.

Book cover

As Charity’s hair is always described as blonde what a shame that the book cover didn’t echo this!

So Easy to Listen To

Love listening to Lesley Pearse, she tells such a good story and you just want to keep listening all the time, feeling sad when you reach the end.

This was really enjoyable, certainly kept me hooked in throughout.

I only wish there were more titles by Lesley on Audible - I would listen to them all.

Enthralling story

A good listen, however some of the graphic ( abuse scenes) made me feel queasy. I found charities character to be quite passive aggressive and also slightly weak, I also found most of the male characters creepy. I wanted charity to learn be strong and independent but she seemed so reliant on others.

So exciting

If you want a book with loads of variety, action and interest with love thrown in, and just the right amount of eroticism thrown in this book will meet your criteria.
