Summary

I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It's undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you've paid off your debts.

Nila Weaver's family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors' past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.

She is no longer free.

Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his 29th birthday. Her life is his until she's paid off a debt that's centuries old. He can do what he likes with her - nothing is out of bounds - she has to obey.

There are no rules. Only payments.

Hmm 🤔😶😶🤔

I'm not overly sure what I think about this book. But unfortunately a friend told.me that it was, "bloody good," that the whole series was. So I took her word and not only bought all of the books, but also the audio too!!

Right now I'm regretting both decisions!!

The book isn't horrendous, just really unbelievable. Maybe the second book will be better, I suppose I'm going to find out....

It's a tale of an old grievance between the Weaver family and the Hawk family. It's one where the oldest Hawk son, at the age of 29 years old, receives an inheritance of the oldest Weaver daughter, between the age of 18 years and 26 olds of age. Once she's taken and brought back to their home, the "debt," starts to be paid off, only ending with her death!!

This is a debt that has been taken up for six hundred years and will continue no matter what,as it was decreed that it will last forever.

Now of course it is Nila Weavers turn today the debt, at the age of 24. But she has no idea about this debt or why it is happening. The first thing she knows is when her father introduces her to Jethro Hawk and tells her that Jethro....Jet to his family....is going to take her out.

At present she's a highly regarded and successful designer and is in Milan showcasing her latest creations. Her father and twin brother have kept her single and not allowed her to date at all, so when her father introduces him and tells her to go with him, she's confused as to why.

From this point things start to quickly spiral. First she is taken to the airport and told that if she doesn't go with him willingly, then her father and brother will be killed. To keep her compliant, while at the airport bar, he drugs her drink with a drug not yet tested.

Once Jethro gets her back to her new home things seriously get worse. Like spending the night sleeping with 11 dogs in their kennel, after being made to crawl the substantial distance to get there. But I won't tell you anymore or there will be no surprises, should you wish to read this book.

Now onto the audio. The narrators for this book are Kylie C Stewart and Will M Watt.

The best part of this narration is that the male comments are made by Will and Kylie speaks for Nila and her mother.

Yep, note how I said that's the best part.

Kylie is quite wooden and Will is marginally better. However, there are no differentiating between the characters, no subtle nuances or timbre and therefore, are grateful that it's followed by....Jethro said, or Me Hawk said....and for me that sort of ruins it a little.

The good news is, that they are not the worst narrators I've come across!!

So lesson learned is as follows....

Next time friend recommends, just buy or if available loan one book first and audio, and don't buy them all in one go!! Either that or ignore said friend the next time she says....

"Hey I've just read and listened to these books and they're brilliant!!"

So do I recommend both.....I'm going to read the second book tomorrow, as I'm going to take a break today and read a great book first. So my advice would be to check around Wednesday for my next review, if the second book is better I'll be recommending it, if not then that would be a pass to both.

Trust me, skip the audio....do not do it. And learn from my mistake, but just the first book and not the huge error of my trusting a friend and spend a LOOOOOOOT of money on audios and possibly books that may not reach higher than the "Mehhh," 🤐🤐🤐🤐 on the scale. Or hey just borrow it from KindleUnlimited. I can't remember if you can get these ones on KindleUnlimited.

So check this space 😶😶

It's ok, hope the series improves

Nila Weaver is indebted to the Hawks, in particular Jethrow Hawk due to some 600 year old agreement that both families still honour for some strange reason. Nila's character hasn't drawn me in as yet. She's creative, smart, inexperienced, at times coy and shy, whilst other times confident and outspoken. Jethrow on the other hand is your ultimate bad guy, the things he puts her through shows he cages a beast within (he's no Q, but twisted all the same). He's the master of his emotions.. that is until Nila.

I liked it but I didn't love it. I'll definitely read the next instalment as the ratings seem to improve.

Hooked!

For the longest time, I wanted to know what the buzz was about this series, and now I know! Pepper Winters has mesmerized us with a story that is not only dark and delicious, but horrific! I had no idea what it was about, but I know I love dark. Starting this story as Nila is given to Jethro as a family debt. How can that be? Why her? What is the debt? Winters takes us back to a time, where debts pass from generation to generation. But this payment is just not viable or legal. Or is it? There are parts of this book that I want to say I love Jethro, then I don't. I feel for Nila, and find her strength incredible, but I am really unsure of the outcome. We are left on a cliffhanger that only leaves you wanting more, and has so many unanswered questions that the only thing to do is download book 2!!! And of course, I am. If you love dark tales, this is for you. I can't wait to see where Ms. Winters is going to take me.

This narration is impeccable. A better Jethro could not have been picked. Will Watt has a voice that can be sexy and seductive, then turn and be commanding and dangerous. His voice acting is one of the best and I am loving his interpretation of Jethro. Kyle Stewart has found the essence of Nila. This is a tough character, young, fairly innocent and in a predicament that she knows what she has to do to survive. Stewart delves in and finds each emotion, leaving us in the dark just as Nila is! A perfect pair for this book.

An exciting, dark read!

Jethro isn't a nice man. Nyla hates him, but she hates the way her body reacts to him more.
I didn't warm to Jethro at all in this first book in The Indebted series but look forward to listening to book 2 and hopefully changing my mind about him.

A slow starter, but well worth continuing

I've read a lot of mixed reviews about this series, and after devouring Monsters in the Dark, I wanted to get lost in more of Pepper's addictive writing.

Jethro is a complicated character... and I'll admit, he's a character I've struggled to like in this book. I've also struggled a little with the basis of the story - I've questioned a lot of things while reading this book and have been left sometimes feeling like maybe... it's going too far. At these times I remind myself - it's fiction. It wouldn't actually happen, but it makes for an interesting storyline, and let's be honest, there are stories out there that are more unbelievable.

I read one review that hated the ending... personally, I loved it, and it was partly the reason I downloaded the rest when I finished this.

This series won't be to everyone's taste, and if you've read Pepper before, you'll already know she loves to write taboo.

Will does an amazing job at portraying Jethro, I could listen to him all day long. He just has a way of making you completely believe the story.

Go in with an open mind, remember it's fiction, and you'll enjoy it.
