Summary

Nice guys finish last, but that doesn't mean they give up the fight. Sometimes it's necessary to keep trudging through the rain in the hopes of finding a break in the clouds.

William Townson is a good person. He's kind, considerate, and the last thing he ever wanted was to hurt anyone. Accidents happen though, and when they do, all that can be done is to pick up the pieces. For William, this means trying to hold together a stagnant relationship while resisting the temptation of Jason Grant, a young man with eyes just as intense as his love. Only the future can promise redemption for mistakes of the past, forcing William to choose between the Coast Guard and the needs of his heart. Can he find his way through the downpour to somewhere warm and dry?

Too long for such a dull character

Something Like Summer was the first LGBT fiction I read and it was a sweet story with likeable characters if a little fanciful at times. The series has had many additions, some better than others but I feel this easily the poorest. Like with 'Winter' there are parts we've heard before played out from a different perspective (the charity lock in we get to relive for the third or fourth time, for example).
If you've read all the previous books you've already got a good idea of how this book reads - this is one of the problems; almost every situation plays out exactly how you'd imagine, its a bit route one, the obvious choice is always the path taken and there are no interesting or pleasant surprises, even the minor details feel like the first thought.
The stories around William's family are really uninspiring and dialogue between characters, which has often been a poor point in this series, continues to feel unnatural at times and there is a distinct lack of chemistry. Books such as 'Boyfriend Material' by Alexis Hall or any of Sean Kennedy's 'Tiger's and Devil's' series are much better at this and make the characters feel more real as a result.
There are elements here that could have been so much better or explored in more detail - William's struggle with his sexuality is dealt with quickly and just felt like filler. The reason for his wanting to break up with Kelly is one dimensional. An aspect of their relationship that could have made for a more interesting story was how William wanted to be bottom but so did Kelly. It could have been written that despite being incompatible in that regard they tried to make it work because they fell in love but instead of going down that route, William was conveniently versatile.
There seems to be an attempt to make the sex scenes a bit more erotic but it falls flat - either go all out or leave sex as implied, the best books do that and it doesn't matter because the story and characters are good enough in their own right.
Another bugbear is that Jay Bell never lets you read in between the lines, everything is pointed out whether its needed or not. This book is twice as long as 'Summer', it feels longer and neither William or the story are interesting enough to warrant it.

Even more twists to this story

Just when I had everything figured out Jay Bell goes and throws in some more curve balls! Emotional rollercoaster just like his other books. The ending had me in knots... Can’t believe only one more novel to go in the series. I’m really hoping they all make a comeback somehow 🤞🏻
