In the land of moss, magnolias, and bayous, ghost stories suffuse the landscape like mist on a moonlit swamp. Swamp ghosts, hot-tempered villains and tricksters once lived there, and live on today in such blood-chilling stories as the six in this collection. For Ages 8 and UpMore
These Cajun stories from the swampy backcountry of Louisiana are creepy and blood-chilling. J.J. Reneaux knows her craft well and takes her time developing these six stories of ghosts and werewolves. From "Half-Man" to "The Ghost of Jean Lafitte," the medley of yarns and legends runs the gamut from the unfamiliar to the well-known. Reneaux's Cajun dialect is quite understandable, and it's not difficult to grasp the stories after adjusting to Reneaux's rhythm and pace. The sound effects generally add to the flavor of this collection. The original slide guitar music by Mark Maxwell is good and used with flawless effect. Great for kids who like such scary stories, ages 8 and up.
"An absolutely wonderful storyteller." (Vancouver Folk Festival)
"Reneaux aims her stories at the heart and rarely misses her mark." (Chicago Tribune)
