Summary

The teacher Patrick Healy travelled around the world, talked with people in different places, and collected around half a thousand myths, legends, and folktales and several alternative versions. His opinion and comments (directly or indirectly) are inevitable. 61 Filipino Tales is the third volume of his work, in his words. He retold the stories with his own opinion and approach to them.

Patrick is an Australian writer who has an abiding interest in the folklore of different cultures. He has lived and worked in Hong Kong for over 25 years as a high school teacher. Patrick has travelled extensively throughout Asia and speaks both Cantonese and Mandarin fluently.

A Great Idea Poorly Applied

I have recently emigrated to the Philippines and was hoping these tales could be shared with my young son so we would both learn something of the countries myths and legends. I'm not sure if they are supposed to be modern tellings of ancient tales or translations from original sources. The language is not free flowing as it mixes old and new. The stories are in no logical order and at the start are somewhat confusing. I think few tales better written, perhaps with explanatory notes, would have been a better experience.
