My 8 and 6 year old boys love this series. It manages to tread the line between "not scary/but meant to be" and "not too scary for bedtime BUT cool enough for 8 year olds" well. Lots of atmospheric language, actual real mythological creatures and a family of (ex)werewolves.
This 3rd book grated a bit for me, as most of it was angst ridden guilty internal dialogue of whether Sammy (our hero) should tell Mark (his best friend) the truth about his crazy life helping Crypto-zoologists save the world. The answer is of course YES HE SHOULD, but my 8 & 6 year olds were gripped just the same. Once we got to the plot bits, it improved for me. They loved the angst. Oh and the fact that Sammy speaks like a teenager in his head (NO WAY!) and complains that school just gets in the way.
I would advise not listening to this as your first installment of the Sammy Feral books. You'll get some massive spoilers on the previous books - there are some flashback moments.
So to summarize; mild peril and chills. None too complicated a plot. Moves a long at a good pace. Great clear narration. Definitely more for the kids than for me.
