Summary

Tim Piggot-Smith reads J. Meade Falkner's exciting tale of a boy who gets caught up in a dangerous adventure with smugglers and treasure. Orphaned John Trenchard is just 15 when his adventures begin...

Growing up by the sea in the village of Moonfleet, John is captivated by the local legend of the ghostly Blackbeard, who rises on winter nights to search for his lost treasure. However, by accidentally discovering a secret passage under the churchyard, John stumbles on the true secret of the village: smuggling. Little does he know that becoming involved in the illegal trade leads to him being accused of murder - with a reward for his capture.

He is forced to leave home and goes on the run. Will he be able to clear his name? And can he finally track down Blackbeard's treasure?

Childhood Remembered

My father read this novel as a child and then read it to me when I was a child and I, in turn, read it to my sons. We had the book and an audiotape read by Kevin Whately.
I really enjoyed this abridged version the actor was magnificent.
My eldest now also has an audiobook by audible - he remembers the book fondly.

Running through my veins.

I was brought up in Dorset, knowing Fleet and Dancing Ledge well. This book encapsulates the spirit of the Dorset coast; those that know, know.

Classic adventure story convincingly narrated

Would you listen to Moonfleet again? Why?

It was quite short and an interesting distraction on a long car journey, suitable for children and adults

What did you like best about this story?

The historical details, good ending, imagery.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The boat scenes

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, not really, it was just absorbing and sometimes unexpected

Any additional comments?

More Swiss Family Robinson than Stephen King, so I would judge it's place as told to mixed generations round a fireside or when driving.

Classic

This is an abridged version of the classic Moonfleet, but it’s just as suspenseful, exciting and exhilarating. A great way of enjoying this classic, great story if you’re short on time.

It’s an ABRIDGED version.

Bitterly disappointing.
Didn’t say this was a very much abridged version.
Absolutely ruined this great book for me.
Now spending hours trying to return this travesty.
(Why is this done to great classics??? Are modern readers deemed incapable of enjoying the language of the book as it was written?)
If you want a mildly diverting very short radio play for children, this’ll just about do.
Grrrrrrr.
