Summary

Sara Crewe est amenée à Londres à l'âge de sept ans par son riche et affectueux père, pour y parfaire son éducation dans l'Institution de Miss Minchin. Celle-ci, flattée de recevoir une élève fortunée, se montre doucereuse tout en prenant secrètement en grippe cette petite fille originale qui, bien qu'excessivement gâtée, est respectueuse des gens et garde un cœur simple et juste.
Un jour, tout bascule : là-bas, aux Indes, le père de Sara meurt, ruiné. Miss Minchin se révèle aussitôt telle qu'on la devinait : sans cœur. Si elle ne jette pas Sara à la rue car cela ferait mauvais effet, elle va l'exploiter sans pitié.
