Summary

Leaders are forged in the fires of war. Iron Age warriors Dug and Lowa captured Maidun castle and freed its slaves. But now they have conquered it, they must defend it.
A Roman invasion is coming from Gaul, but rather than uniting to protect their home, the British tribes battle each other - and see Maidun as an easy target.
Meanwhile Lowa's spies infiltrate Gaul, discovering the Romans have recruited bloodthirsty British druids, and Maidunite Ragnall finds his loyalties torn when he meets Rome's charismatic general, Julius Caesar.

Just so good

For me a perfect blend of Joe Abercrombie, Bernard Cornwall and a smidgen of Patrick Rothfuss. Second book as good as or better than first.

Another quality tale of pre-Roman adventure

First, the narrator on this is to be highly praised. Turns out it's not just kids who love it when people 'do the voices'.
The book is a fun adventure story where the writer mixes fact with (intelligent) guess work to create compelling characters that you care about. before listening I was concerned the story would lose momentum, but I had nothing to be worried about!

Perfect blend of historical fiction and fantasy

I have been waiting for book two to come out on Audible because I really enjoyed book one- this book did not disappoint. The same narrator, Sean Barrett, who is such a perfect fit for this setting! I've listened to other narrative books he has done and he is becoming a favorite! There is more magic In book two and carries on with the same core characters. The author adds that the battles and Roman characters appear to be accurate according to Roman history. Gives it a fun imaginative twist to epic fantasy. I Look forward to the audible release of book three!
